Shakan Pitters will no longer be fighting for the European Light Heavyweight title tonight on DAZN in Sheffield after his replacement opponent Lee Ingelrest failed to adhere to weigh-in guidelines.
Fight Disciples were first to report the news.
Originally, Pitters (19-2, 6 KOs) was set to be in action against Daniel Blenda Dos Santos (22-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant 175-pound EBU strap.
But Dos Santos failed a pre-fight medical, with an EBU statement reading: “Due to serious medical conditions Daniel Blenda Dos Santos is not authorised to fight until further notice," an EBU statement read.
“For this reason, being us at two days from the execution date, we exceptionally accepted the proposal of the staging promoter – GBM Mr Gostolo – to replace Daniel Blenda Dos Santos with Lee Ingelrest, who is ready and accepted to fight Shakan Pitters for such a vacant title on 7th February next in Sheffield.”
Ingelrest (12-0-1, 4 KOs), however, has also had to pull out of the bout as well due a weight discrepancy, and Pitters will now fight journeyman Bahadur Karami (4-23-4, 1 KO) in a non-title six-round contest instead.
Now main-eventing the GBM Sports card at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, which gets underway from 6pm GMT on DAZN, is Shakiel Thompson's 175-pound eight-round bout with David Benitez (11-9, 3 KOs).
Thompson (13-0, 9 KOs) stopped River Wilson-Bent (17-5-2, 7 KOs) in his last fight, while Pitters has picked up a couple of routine wins since losing a British title fight to Dan Azeez (20-2-1, 13 KOs) in September 2022.
