Perhaps A Case Of Bad Timing, Bam Rodriguez Admits Naoya Inoue Clash May Never Happen
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez knows a thing or two about super fights. One he would to challenge himself with in the future, however, may never take place.

There aren’t many fighters who have the scalps of three possible Hall of Famers on their resume, especially at the age of 25. Rodriguez, nevertheless, does.

In 2022, Rodriguez kicked off his year by taking down Carlos Cuadras for the vacant WBC super flyweight title. A few months later, he defended said title against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, stopping him in the eighth.

Fast forward two years later, and Rodriguez was back at it again. This time, it was Juan Francisco Estrada who was railroaded.

By and large, Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs) is viewed as one of the best fighters on the planet, but so is Naoya Inoue, who lurks near his weight class. For years now, the two have been mentioned side by side. While Rodriguez would love to eventually swap fists with him, considering their age gap, he’s coming to the realization that their hypothetical showdown may very well remain in a conjectural world.

“I guess so in a way,” said Rodriguez to The Ring when asked if a matchup between them seems less pragmatic nowadays. “He’s kind of older, I’m still younger but the fight can happen any day so we’ll see.”

Currently, the pair are separated by two weight classes but talk has already surrounded Inoue making another move up to featherweight next year. Rodriguez, on the other hand, is feeling incredibly comfortable in the super flyweight division.

For now, he’ll continue going about his business and attempt to unify the junior-bantamweight division when taking on Phumelele Cafu on July 19th, headlining Matchroom's card from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

Another Rodriguez victory is a formality the way the pound-for-pound star sees it. But in the back of his mind, thoughts of Inoue (30-0, 27 KOs) will run rampant. Their potential showdown may not be as likely to unfold as it once was, though the 25-year-old has told fans they shouldn’t lose hope in that clash eventually taking place.

“That’s a fight that people want to see," continued Rodriguez. "So hopefully, we can make it happen one day.”
