Pat McCormack could land British, Commonwealth title shot with a victory
Matchroom are plotting a British and Commonwealth welterweight clash between Conah Walker and Pat McCormack — and hope it could land on the Chris Eubank-Conor Benn II undercard.

McCormack returns to the ring Saturday for his second outing of 2025 when he takes on Miguel Parra (25-5-1, 17 KOs) at Rainton Meadows Arena in Houghton-le-Spring.

The 30-year-old from Sunderland has been a professional for more than three years but this will be only the eighth fight of his stop-start career with injuries affecting his progress.

His promoter Eddie Hearn, who signed him after his first two fights in 2022, admits it has been a frustrating project, but the Matchroom boss is steadfast that McCormack remains one of the world's best fighters with fewer than 10 fights.

He stopped the experienced Robbie Davies Jr. at Co-op Live Arena in Manchester in February and is expected to face his toughest test to date against a Mexican who took the highly rated Uzbek Shakhram Giyasov the distance and only lost via split decision in their 150-pound fight in July last year.

Hearn said McCormack could land his first attempt at major titles should he come through Saturday night’s encounter victorious and injury-free.

Walker (16-3-1, 7 KOs), who holds the British and Commonwealth belts at 147 pounds, stopped Liam Taylor in stunning fashion in June to secure his third big victory on the spin since he dropped a points decision against Lewis Crocker last year.

Hearn, who has promoted his last six fights, told The Ring that he is hoping to match the Wolverhampton man with McCormack later this year. He has earmarked the November 15 card at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, headlined by Eubank's rematch with Benn, as the perfect platform for the clash.

“I think frustrating is a good word to sum up the Pat McCormack story so far,” Hearn said. “It’s frustrating given his talent and that a lot of it is out of your control.

“He’s had a few injuries which have stopped him from progressing, but everyone has known for so long just how good Pat is. I believe he can move levels well beyond where he is now but he still has to be developed in the right way.

“Parra is a good step-up but it’s the last one before you’re getting thrown in the deep end. We can’t wait around when you’ve got someone as talented as Pat who is 30 years old. He’s not old, but he’s good enough to be fighting for world titles.

“We are where we are but it’s not a problem. We’ve got someone capable of winning world titles so we just need to get him the momentum and the confidence for that dive into the deep end.

“I really like the fight with Conah Walker. It’s not an easy fight for either guy, it’s a great style clash and it would decide which of them then go onto world level because they are both within touching distance.

“Conah Walker wants a big fight and he may not think that McCormack is the one for him. He would probably rather jump in with a world name and take a gamble rather than box someone who, at 7 or 8-0, is still essentially a prospect.

“But let’s see what happens there. McCormack has to look sensational against Parra first and then him against Walker is a fight that could happen on the Eubank-Benn undercard.”
