Pat Brown Finally Has A Fight On His Hands
Pat Brown has talked enough.

Over the past few months, the 25 year old Mancunian has been a good natured participant in a long, determined promotional effort.

Finally, the 2024 Olympian has a fight to talk about.

Brown will box as a cruiserweight and on Friday evening he will make his professional debut against Argentina’s Federico Grandone, 7-4-2 (3 KOs) at Planet Ice in Altrincham.

There is a different look in Brown’s eyes and a different tone and menace in his words.

“I've still not put on a 10-ounce glove and I've not punched in a 10-ounce glove yet,” Brown told The Ring.

“Jamie [Moore, his trainer] is saying, ‘Do you want to try it out in the gym?’ and I’ve said I'll wait until fight day.

“I want to feel my knuckle clench against the leather and feel how small they are because I've been told they are very small.”

Back in November, the news that Brown had decided to commit his future to Matchroom Boxing attracted around 300 people into central Manchester on a cold winter’s evening for a question and answer session and an official announcement.

The publicity went into overdrive.

Since then Brown has hit pads at open workouts and commentated at shows. There have been promotional videos, press releases and hundreds of interviews.

He has taken each and every new experience in his stride and got on with the serious business of tweaking his aggressive, heavy handed approach to suit professional boxing.

Brown hasn’t looked into an opponents eyes since he stood opposite Brazil’s Keno Machado in the Olympic ring last June but the sight of Grandone instantly reignited some familiar - and welcome - feelings.

“100%. When you're looking them in the eyes and stuff it's pure and natural and the eyes never lie,” he said.

“Usually every time I square off with an opponent it’s when we're in the ring ready to fight so, when I squared off with him yesterday it was quite funny.

“You have to kind of zone in and then you're doing all media and photos and then you've got to zone in again. So, it's a new experience for me but I enjoyed it and it's part and parcel of the pro game.”

British boxing badly needs a new wave of ticket selling stars and Matchroom have clearly decided to put Brown on an accelerated path to the top.

The extensive promotional push has gone to extreme lengths to paint him as an ordinary man of the people who won’t need bells and whistles in order to become one of the countries most popular fighters.

Brown is clearly appreciative to have been given such strong backing so early in his career but after patiently telling yet another interviewer what they can expect to see on Friday night, he could be forgiven for silently breathing a big sigh of relief that, for the time being at least, he can let his boxing and fighting ability speak for him.

“I'm in a certain mind frame now and I'm ready to do the business. I’m that type of person. All this razzmatazz stuff, it ain't for me,” he said.

“I know it comes as part and parcel but I'm ready to get in there, put on a show and give the fight fans what they want. I've been thrown in the deep end but once the weigh-in's done tomorrow I can just focus on the one job and that's fighting on Friday

“Obviously, it's been a lot of build-up and we've not had an opponent and now we're two days out with a fight. It's here and it's real. The weight's coming off, I'm feeling good and I'm in that sort of mindset now where I'm ready to target and destroy.”
