Liam Paro will make his first defense of the IBF junior welterweight title on the same island where he won it almost six months earlier.
As appreciative as Paro is for the opportunity to fight in Puerto Rico again, he hopes a victory over Richardson Hitchins leads to a forthcoming title defense in his home country of Australia. Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) is a native of Mackay and trains in Brisbane, one of the expansive continent's most populous cities.
Paro, 28, last fought in Australia in October 2022, when he scored a first-round knockout of then-unbeaten 20-0 countryman Brock Jarvis in South Brisbane.
"I've been on the road for a few years," Paro told The Ring.
"I'm a true road warrior and believe the Aussie fans deserve it. We're a long way away. It's still a 20-hour flight away from the rest of the world, so I think the Aussie fans deserve. God willing, December 7th I get the job done, and then I think I deserve a good homecoming to defend my throne, for sure."
The Ring has confirmed that co-promoters Eddie Hearn and Lou DiBella would like to match Paro against former unified lightweight champ George Kambosos in an all-Australia showdown sometime in the middle of 2025.
If Paro can beat Brooklyn's Hitchins (18-0, 7 KOs), Sydney's Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) would need to defeat an opponent to be determined sometime in February to land a shot at Paro's championship later next year.
"Anything's possible," Paro said. "There's some massive fights. The 140-pound division's packed, but it's strictly business now. I just wanna make another big statement in this division."
DAZN will stream Paro's 12-round fight with Hitchins (18-0, 7 KOs), pitting The Ring's No. 3-ranked junior welterweight contender against its No. 8-rated challenger, as the main event from Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan (7 p.m. ET; 4 p.m. PT).
Paro produced an upset over 12 rounds on June 15, outpointing Matias (21-2, 21 KOs) on home soil at Juan Abreu Coliseum in Manati, Puerto Rico.
