Otto Wallin doesn’t believe this will be the last we see of Derek Chisora in a boxing ring even if the Swedish southpaw decisively defeats him Saturday night in Manchester.
Chisora is 41 and has repeatedly stated that his fight with Wallin will mark his last bout before appreciative British boxing fans. Regardless, the 34-year-old Wallin needs to fend off the hard-charging, London-based heavyweight in their 12-round IBF elimination match at Co-op Live Arena to have any opportunity at rejuvenating his career 13½ months after Anthony Joshua demolished him.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Wallin (27-2, 15 KOs, 1 NC) knocked out unheralded Nigerian Onoriode Ehwarieme (20-5, 19 KOs) in the first round of his only bout since his loss to Joshua. That bout took place July 26 at Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Chisora (35-13, 23 KOs) has won back-to-back 10-round unanimous decisions over faded veteran heavyweights Joe Joyce (16-3, 15 KOs) and Gerald Washington (20-6-1, 13 KOs), but Wallin is more than a 2-1 favorite to beat him according to DraftKings sportsbook.
“He is obviously getting older,” Wallin told The Ring. “This is his last fight in the UK, but he always brings it. He’s always in wars and, you know, with southpaws he knocked out [Artur] Szpilka and then gave Usyk a really good fight, actually. So, you know, even though he’s getting older you can’t underestimate him. He’s a guy who’s always gonna be aggressive and bring it. And I’m sure he’s just gonna try to get to me, throw bombs and try to rough me up and make it a tough fight. So, I can never underestimate a guy like him.”
The aggressive, rugged Chisora gave Oleksandr Usyk some trouble in a 12-round bout the Ukrainian southpaw won by unanimous decision in October 2020 at OVO Arena Wembley in London. Usyk, of course, went on to become boxing’s first fully unified heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.
Chisora, a native of Zimbabwe, was far less successful in his third fight with Tyson Fury, then the unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion, in December 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
“Sometimes when you look at tapes you say he slowed down a little bit and his feet aren’t what they used to be,” Wallin said. “But, you know, it’s hard to know because some styles make it hard to look good against that style. You don’t really know until you get into the ring. But I know he’s a very tough guy and he’s gonna bring it.”
Wallin-Chisora is the main event of a 10-fight card presented by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. TNT Sports 1’s coverage of the Wallin-Chisora undercard is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. GMT in the United Kingdom and at 1:30 p.m. ET in the United States on DAZN.
