Foster is a slight favorite to defeat Fulton in the co-feature of a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view show at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
O’Shaquie Foster wasn’t as impressed as some by the way Stephen Fulton beat Brandon Figueroa in their rematch seven months ago.
Foster doesn’t dispute that Fulton clearly won their second fight Feb. 1 in Las Vegas. He just didn’t think it was anything special from Fulton, who defeated Figueroa by unanimous decision to win the WBC featherweight title.
Fulton (23-1, 8 KOs) will need to be much better than that, according to Foster (23-3, 12 KOs), to win their fight for the WBC super featherweight championship Oct. 25 in Las Vegas.
“I thought it was all right,” Foster said during a virtual press conference recently. “I didn’t like think it was this [great] performance like y’all trying to say. … Y’all just talking like it was just like [what Terence] Crawford just did to Canelo [Alvarez] or something. I thought it was a good performance. He won and did what he was supposed to do.”
Judges Max De Luca (117-111), David Sutherland (116-112) and Zachary Young (116-112) all scored at least eight rounds for Fulton on the David Benavidez-David Morrell undercard. Fulton won their first fight, but oddsmakers favored Figueroa (26-2-1, 19 KOs) entering their rematch because the former struggled in his prior appearance — a 10-round, split-decision victory over Carlos Castro (30-3, 14 KOs) a year ago.
Fulton won their first fight by majority decision in November 2021 in Las Vegas. Two judges, Tim Cheatham and Dave Moretti, scored that bout 116-112 for Fulton as well, but Sutherland saw it as a draw, 114-114.
Their initial action-packed meeting was a “Fight of the Year” candidate. The rematch with Figueroa wasn’t nearly that entertaining.
“I feel like [Fulton] did better in the first fight,” Foster said. “I bet the first fight looked better. Sharper … I thought it looked better the first fight. But the second fight, he won. He did good. Like I don’t think it was this great showing. But it was a good fight. He won. Respect.”
Foster is a slight favorite to defeat Fulton in the co-feature of a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view show at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The card will match WBC super welterweight champ Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs), a 6-foot-6 southpaw from Coachella, California, against former WBA/WBC welterweight champ Keith Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs), of Clearwater, Florida, in the main event.
