The Ring, WBA and WBO strawweight champion
Oscar Collazo is ready to return to action.
The 28-year-old Puerto Rican will face once-beaten Jayson Vayson in his latest title defence to
headline Golden Boy's show at Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California this Saturday.
DAZN will stream Saturday's championship contest worldwide at 8pm ET/1am BST.
"It feels real good to be getting back in the ring with this fighter, who has fought very good opposition and likes to bring the fight - it is going to be very entertaining," Collazo (12-0, 9 KOs) told
The Ring.
This marks the first time Collazo will have boxed since taking out Edwin Cano (13-3-1, 4 KOs) in five rounds during their Cancun contest in Mexico on March 29.
"It was a very good fight to stay active with a very active fighter, who came to fight," he said, reflecting on his most recent outing. "I dominated the body early and that is how I got the stoppage."
After his latest victory,
he was given a special award in Villalba, Puerto Rico the following month for making five successful WBO title defences.
"I was a special moment for me, and it was in my hometown," he said. "Thanks to Paco [Valcarcel] and President Gustavo [Olivieri], all my fans and family were there, and loved it."
Now it's back to business and though he'd have liked to further unify against either WBC titlist Melvin Jerusalem or
IBF counterpart Pedro Taduran - both expressing their desire to face him - the 28-year-old must wait for the time being.
Bryan Perez of Miguel Cotto Promotions, who co-promote Collazo with Golden Boy Promotions, believes both bouts happen next year.
"They both had title defenses scheduled," said Perez. "We hope to work out those fights soon. That will be the plan, as he still makes weight with no problem."
Collazo doubled down on wanting to face his rival champions in the near future.
"I was willing to fight them and believe me, I want them, they are holding my titles," he said. "They were too difficult to make happen [at this time] and that's why I had to go this route, but I want it, and after finishing this fight, I want them."
Vayson, The Ring's No. 10-rated junior flyweight, has been a professional since October 2016. Since then, the only blemishes on the 27-year-old Filipino's record have come against world champions.
A six-round draw with Rene Mark Cuarto in September 2019 has aged well, seeing as 'Mighty Mouse' went on to hold the IBF 105-pound title.
He lost every round on the scorecards against future WBA flyweight kingpin
Seigo Yuri Akui in February 2023 but has since gone on a four-fight win streak - including a second-round stoppage over former WBO strawweight boss Ryuya Yamanaka. The impending title challenger is currently ranked No. 10 with the WBA and the WBO's No. 7 contender.
