Orlando, Florida - Team USA Olympic Bronze Medalist Omari Jones (1-0, 1 KO) received a hero’s welcome by the hometown crowd as he stopped Alessio Mastronunzio (14-6, 4 KOs) in the second round of the super-welterweight bout.
The 22-year-old Jones was poised in the face of his major moment, staying behind his jab and regularly overwhelming his Italian opponent with his right hand. After warning Mastronunzio in between rounds, the referee had seen enough, stopping the fight 22 seconds into the second round as Jones landed several quick and powerful punches to earn the TKO.
“It felt like I was back at the Olympics, I’m just home now,” Jones told DAZN analyst Chris Mannix immediately following the bout. “I’ve been saying at the press conference; it's nothing new to me. Shout out to USA Boxing for giving me the platform and being able to shine on big stages, to have me prepared for this moment. I’ve been ready, no nerves. I just come out and do what I was born for.”
Eddie Hearn joined Jones in the ring post-fight and immediately heaped praise on the young prospect. “I think what you’re seeing tonight is a future superstar of American boxing. I really believe that. Not just that, but he’s a fine young man with a great temperament.”
Hearn also revealed that fans will be able to see Jones in the ring again in four weeks’ time, fighting on the undercard of Jaron “Boots” Ennis vs. Eimantas Stanionis in Atlantic City on April 12.
