The lone U.S. boxer to medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics now has an opponent for his pro debut.
Omari Jones, who claimed a Bronze medal for Team USA last summer, is confirmed to face Italy’s Alessio Mastronunzio in a scheduled six-round, junior middleweight contest. The bout will serve as the co-feature to the March 15 Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams-Patrice Volny DAZN headliner from Caribe Royale in Jones’ hometown of Orlando, Florida.
Mastronunzio (14-5, 4 KOs) will fight in the U.S. for just the second time. The 30-year-old from Lazio has won three of his last four starts, and has fought repeatedly at the ten-round, regional title level.
That type of experience was precisely what Jones and his team had in mind with the intention to hit the ground running in the paid ranks.
“We could’ve easily faced an 8-5, or even 2-2 guy in a walkover fight,” Jason Galarza, Jones’ trainer, told The Ring. “But we picked an experienced guy like [Mastronunzio]. We don’t want Omari going backwards.”
Jones spared the U.S. Olympic male boxing team the embarrassment of being shut out at the medal table for the second time this century with his impressive run in Paris. The 22-year-old Orlando native scored two landslide wins to advance to the semifinal round of the welterweight bracket.
The dream run ended with a contentious decision to eventual Gold medalist Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev in the semifinal round. There was a strong argument that Jones deserved the nod, but he fell just short in a 3-2 decision in favor of the Uzbek southpaw, who was the reigning World amateur champion at the time.
Having always boasted a pro-friendly style, it was clear that Jones would not wait around for 2028 Los Angeles for another shot at Olympic Gold. His team made the decision to sign with Matchroom Boxing, who will present the March 15 event.
