Olivia Curry Hopes To Fulfill Dream In Rematch With Kaye Scott
For Olivia Curry, her rematch against Kaye Scott is about more than just a chance to rid herself of the awful feeling that comes with fighting to a draw.

It’s an opportunity to fulfill the reason why she first put on a pair of gloves. Curry will have a chance to reach the pinnacle of her career when she faces Scott for a second time for the vacant WBA and WBC middleweight titles in a 10-round bout Saturday night at Fox Theatre in Detroit in the main event of a Salita Promotions card on DAZN.

“It's still the dream,” Curry told The Ring. “It's still why I'm doing this sport. I spent so much time before the last fight thinking about what that would be like. Now, it feels just as tantalizing as it did the first time, but I also got the taste of [how] it could not happen.”

Chicago’s Curry (7-2-2, 2 KOs) and Australia’s Scott (4-1-1) delivered an all-action affair in their first fight on September 19 at Fox Theatre. Scott, 41, found success when she controlled the fight with her sharper punches at range and inside the pocket, while Curry’s work on the inside, particularly to the body, helped her make a rally in the second half.

By the time the final bell rang, there wasn’t much to separate the two fighters. The final scorecards reflected that, as it was scored a majority draw. Judges Nathan Palmer and Vincent Santino scored the fight 95-95, while Rosemary Gross had it 98-92 for Scott.

Curry, 36, was right back in the gym after the draw. With the 10 rounds of experience against Scott to lean on, she’s just looking to improve in specific areas of her game for their second meeting, rather than reinventing the wheel.

“It's just fine-tuning things like turning the dial up 10 percent on a few little things to make a difference,” Curry said. “With a draw, I think that's all we really need to focus on. How do we laser in on those little things that are going to make the difference. A few things we've been working on are a little more movement [and] a little more head movement. I got caught up in my aggressive style in the first fight, and let too many rounds go by where she was just touching me with little things that were accumulating points. So being a little more responsible with that, and then getting to the body even earlier, landing those big shots even earlier, focusing on damage, and trying not to get sucked into the game plan of Olympic-style boxing.”

The draw was Curry’s second in a row, as she fought to a split draw against Melody Popravak in April 2024. While the consecutive draws frustrated Curry, she felt much more pleased with the effort she gave against Scott.

“My performances were very different,” Curry said. “I think that against Scott, besides some of the obvious flaws, I felt like I left it all in the ring. It was a good fight. I was in shape, and everything went correctly. The draw before that, I felt more like there was something in the ring that I wasn't fully following through on.”

On the heels of back-to-back draws, Curry has left no stone unturned, knowing that she needs to find another gear if she’s going to emerge victorious 92 days after she and Scott first fought. If she can do that, it could mean that her dream when she first put on a pair of gloves becomes a reality.

“You don’t want to let yourself believe so hard that you don’t remember that if you don't put in the work, and if you don’t do everything you're supposed to do, that dream could slip away,” Curry said. “That's where my mind is at. If I want to win, I have to go perform a little better than I did last time.”
