Edgar Berlanga Believes Hamzah Sheeraz Lost To Out-Of-Shape Carlos Adames

According to the brash Brooklyn native, Sheeraz unsuccessfully tried to get out of his commitment to battling Berlanga in what will be the British contender’s debut at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds. Based on what Berlanga witnessed in Sheeraz’s last fight, he is convinced he would’ve been wise to choose another opponent for such an important moment in his career.

In fact, Berlanga suspects that if Carlos Adames would’ve been in better shape Feb. 22 when he defended his WBC middleweight title, he would’ve stopped Sheeraz inside the 12-round distance. The Dominican Republic’s Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs) instead settled for a controversial split draw with Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs).

Berlanga disagreed with judges Guido Cavalleri, who scored Sheeraz a 115-114 winner, and Omar Mintun Sr., who saw it 114-114. From Berlanga’s perspective, Barry Linderman’s 118-110 score for Adames was much closer to what transpired on the Dmitry Bivol-Artur Beterbiev undercard at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“A hundred percent, [Sheeraz] lost,” Berlanga told The Ring after a press conference Thursday at Palladium Times Square. “He knew that. He got his ass whipped. And Adames was out of shape. Adames got tired. If you really look at that fight, Adames got tired. If Adames was in shape and had conditioning, Adames would’ve stopped him.

“But that’s what comes with conditioning. That’s why you gotta have conditioning to go those 12 rounds. Because if not, you’re gonna get [expletive]. Adames coulda stopped him, but he couldn’t because he ain’t have no conditioning.”

Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) assured reporters and videographers Thursday that he will be championship shape when he faces Sheeraz in a 12-round bout that will headline a DAZN Pay-Per-View show at Louis Armstrong Stadium, a 14,000-seat tennis venue in Queens. The prideful Berlanga, who has lost only to undisputed super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez, feels an additional responsibility to knock out the taller Sheeraz because they will box on a high-profile card in Berlanga’s backyard.

DraftKings established Berlanga as a slight favorite over Sheeraz (-140/+110) on a card that also will feature undefeated WBC lightweight champ Shakur Stevenson. The 27-year-old Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs), a three-division champion from Newark, New Jersey, will defend his 135-pound crown against his mandatory challenger, Mexican southpaw William Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs).
