Nonito Donaire is making one more bid at a world title.
Donaire, a four-division champion, will make his return Saturday when facing
Andres Campos for the interim WBA bantamweight title at Casino Buenos Aires in Argentina, representing a first appearance for the future Hall of Famer in just under 23 months.
The 42-year-old enters this fight having lost two straight. The "Filipino Flash" lost by second-round stoppage during his rematch with undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue in 2022. In his last outing a year later, Donaire (42-8, 28 KOs) lost by unanimous decision to Alexandro Santiago for the vacant WBO bantamweight title on the undercard of Terence Crawford's ninth-round stoppage win over Errol Spence Jr.
Donaire's last win came on Dec. 11, 2021, when he stopped Reymart Gaballo in Round 4 to successfully make the second defense of his WBC bantamweight title.
Campos, meanwhile, is coming into this contest after a third-round stoppage of Jimson Garcia on April 12. In his lone title shot, Campos (17-2-1, 6 KOs) lost a 12-round unanimous decision to former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards in 2023.
The Donaire-Campos winner will be in line to face the winner of Antonio Vargas vs Daigo Higa
takes place on July 30 in Japan. Vargas holds the WBA bantamweight title.
Donaire won his first world title on July 7, 2007, when he stopped
then-IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan in the fifth round.
He defended that title three times before moving up to 115 pounds. After notching four wins at junior bantamweight, Donaire moved up to bantamweight and won his second world title when he knocked out Fernando Montiel in the second round in 2011 to become the WBC and WBO champion.
Donaire added the WBO junior featherweight title to his resume with a split-decision victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. a year later and a unanimous decision win over Cesar Juarez for the vacant WBO featherweight title in 2015.
