Najee Lopez wanted a recognizable name on his resume. And while Gilbert Castillo Rivera hasn't proven to be a world-class fighter, he has fought some of the light heavyweight division's best.
Anxious to prove that he belonged, Lopez (13-0, 10 KOs) took things seriously the moment the opening bell rang in Plant City,, Florida. He bounced up and down on his toes and pushed out a strong jab. Castillo kept a high guard and allowed Lopez's innocuous punches to bounce off his gloves as he inched closer.
Activity wasn't Castillo's strong suit in the opening round but he remained calm as Lopez continued to throw hard shots. The longtime veteran came out a bit stronger in the second. He showed off a nice catch-and-shoot game and landed a few strong right hands. For Lopez, on the other hand, it was all about the body.
In the third and fourth rounds, Castillo (25-7-1, 19 KOs) began applying foot pressure. Lopez fainted throughout the rounds and let off several combinations, many of which left the crowd oohing and ahhing.
The mid-rounds got ugly for Castillo. In the fifth, Lopez faked a shot to the body and finished up top. In the sixth, for the first time all night long, he began pressing the action. Fighting on the back foot appeared uncomfortable for Castillo. With roughly a minute remaining remainder, the longtime veteran was kissing the canvas, thanks to several combinations.
Castillo stumbled as he made his way back to his feet but he urged Lopez to bring it. Big mistake. A few seconds later, Lopez threw the kitchen sink at his man, forcing a corner stoppage.
