Nahir Albright must wait to try to build on the momentum he established by beating Kelvin Davis four months ago.
Albright was scheduled to face former IBF lightweight champ Richard Commey on Saturday night in Brooklyn, but their 10-round junior welterweight fight was canceled Thursday.
The Ring couldn’t confirm the reason their bout was scrapped on such short notice by the time this story was posted.
Albright (17-2, 7 KOs, 1 NC), of Sicklerville, New Jersey, and Ghana’s Commey (31-5-1, 28 KOs) were set to square off in the co-feature on the
Danny Garcia-Daniel Gonzalez undercard at Barclays Center.
Albright defeated Davis (15-1, 8 KOs) by majority decision in their 10-rounder June 7 at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Albright told The Ring and other outlets that former WBO lightweight champ Keyshawn Davis, Kelvin’s older brother,
head-butted him during an altercation in Albright’s locker room following his victory in Davis’ hometown.
The incident somewhat overshadowed Albright’s win. He didn’t pursue legal action against Keyshawn Davis, whom police escorted out of Scope Arena after he and Albright’s brother, Terrance Brown, yelled at each other in the hallway outside of Albright’s locker room.
Keyshawn Davis was stripped of his WBO belt the previous day because he came in 4.3 pounds overweight for a 135-pound title defense against Edwin De Los Santos. That main event was canceled when De Los Santos’ promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, wouldn’t allow him to fight the heavier Davis due to safety concerns.
Keyshawn Davis beat Albright by majority decision in October 2023 in Rosenberg, Texas. The outcome of their 10-round fight was changed to a no-contest because Davis tested positive for marijuana, a substance banned by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.
Albright, 29, has fought only once in the two years since he faced Keyshawn Davis.
Commey, 38, is 2-3-1 in his past six fights. His three losses during that stretch came against Ring/WBO junior welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez, former unified lightweight champ Vasiliy Lomachenko and former WBC/WBO junior welterweight champ Jose Ramirez.
