Former unified cruiserweight champion
Murat Gassiev will take on Andrzej Wawrzyk on Aug. 23 at Miccosukee Indian Gaming Resort in Miami, Florida.
The heavyweight bout is scheduled for 10 rounds as part of an M&R Boxing show promoted by Laura Ching.
The occasion will mark the first time Gassiev (31-2, 24 KOs) has fought in the United States since 2017. The Russian has kept busy with fights in Armenia, Serbia, Turkey and Russia in recent years following a run as an IBF and WBA cruiserweight crownholder.
After wins against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and Yuniel Dorticos, Gassiev's cruiserweight reign ended in 2018 when he lost by unanimous decision, and for the first time professionally, against
Oleksandr Usyk.
Gassiev, 31, took his second loss in 14 years in 2023 via split decision against
Otto Wallin. He got back into the win column last time out in October with a fifth-round knockout of Kem Ljungquist.
Wawrzyk (34-5, 20 KOs) is a 37-year-old from Poland who has lost four of his last five fights in the past two years, with the most notable defeat coming against
Kubrat Pulev. Wawrzyk was also knocked out by Alexander Povetkin in 2013.
