Moses Itauma will face once-beaten former San Francisco 49er Mike Balogun in Glasgow on May 24.
The 20-year-old is yet to box this year after demolishing Demsey McKean inside a round at the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh on December 21.
He was initially expected to feature on the Heavy Impact card headlined by Filip Hrgovic’s victory over Joe Joyce on April 5 but as revealed by The Ring last month, Itauma was instead pencilled onto Queensberry’s May 24 card at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.
And it has now been confirmed that the southpaw prodigy will face 21-1 (16) Balogun as he looks to continue his march towards the upper echelons of the heavyweight division.
Fellow southpaw Balogun suffered the first defeat of his career when he was knocked out by Murat Gassiev in the Armenian capital of Yerevan in March 2023. He has since boxed once, beating 11-20-5 Lamont Capers on points over eight 13 months ago.
But the former professional linebacker, who swapped American football for boxing back in 2014, has been handed the chance to completely revive his career against Itauma, widely considered the future of the division.
What this fight does mean, however, is there is now no chance of Itauma becoming history’s youngest heavyweight champion, which was the goal when he first turned professional at the age of 18.
Mike Tyson is the current holder of that record, as he won the title aged 20 years, four months and 22 days back in November 1986 when he knocked out Trevor Berbick. Itauma would need to win a world title by May 19 to beat that record but this outing against Balogun will make that impossible.
However, another explosive inside-distance victory will move him to 12-0 (10) and leave him well placed for a potential crack at the world title inside the next 12 months.
The May 24 card, which will be shown on DAZN, is headlined by Josh Taylor’s clash with Ekow Essuman.
