Moses Itauma compared to Tiger, LeBron and Beckham ahead of Dillian Whyte test
LONDON, England — Heavyweight hotshot Moses Itauma has the ability to become as culturally significant as the likes of LeBron James, Tiger Woods and David Beckham.

That is the lofty aim of his manager Francis Warren, who believes it is the 20-year-old’s temperament above all else that will enable him to emerge as the next great flag bearer for British sport.

The latest step on that path comes on Aug. 16 when he takes on Dillian Whyte, the 37-year-old former world title challenger, in Riyadh live on DAZN pay-per-view.

It will be the 13th fight of Itauma’s fledgling career and the first real test against a world level opponent so far. In his 12 fights to date, Itauma has needed a total of just 25 rounds of action to win them all.

He is currently ranked No.1 with the WBO, No. 2 with the WBA and No. 6 and No. 10 with the IBF and WBC respectively. It has been predicted that Itauma is capable of winning multiple world heavyweight title belts but his manager Warren, promoter Frank’s eldest son, thinks the youngster’s impact will be far more transcendent than that.

Warren told The Ring: “Moses can be the flag bearer for British sport internationally, not just as a boxer, but I think he can be a cultural icon internationally. When you think about people like Tiger Woods or LeBron James. He is one of those guys.

“He will be one of those people that you'll feel like he's been around forever, even though he's still only young. He's a guy that people look up to, people will massively respect. For sure, he's going to be the flag bearer for British boxing, British sport for years and years to come.

“I think for me the key to that is the ability to retain information and execute the instructions and what he works on day-in, day-out in the gym, under pressure.

“It's no different to watching David Beckham take a free kick at Old Trafford against Greece to get England to the World Cup. It doesn't matter where they are, they make it happen. Like Tiger Woods sinking a 20-foot putt, or LeBron making that last-minute three-pointer. It's that ability to completely zone out and execute what they train so hard to do.

“That's the most impressive thing for me with Moses. He's got that temperament, it's temperament mixed with ability, mixed with hard work, determination, and sheer tenacity to go and become what he knows he can be.”

While nobody in Itauma’s team is looking beyond the test posed by Whyte in Riyadh, Warren did also hint at what sort of opponent might be next should the 20-year-old do the business in the main event of the Esports World Cup.

“It’s not just about Dillian Whyte, it’s about thinking in the next five, six, seven months, which guys will help him climb the ladder," Warren adds.

“You’ve got the winner of Filip Hrgovic and David Adeleye, there’s Otto Wallin or Kubrat Pulev perhaps. There's some guys out there that I've got my eye on.

“We will not be rushing him to a world title fight because once you go through that gate, it's difficult to step back.

“Generally, I think Dillian gives Moses that bit of a launch pad, because obviously he's a big name, Dillian. In fact, is a serious, serious customer.

“However, if you're asking will Moses fight for a world title next, or the next one after that, whatever opportunities come up, and as long as it's right for Moses and he himself feels that it's the right move for him, then we'll move on it.

“I know for a fact he's not worried about fighting anybody. It's just about experience at this stage, so it's a very exciting time for him, because there's a lot on the table, and a lot of different things he can nudge himself towards.”
