Mitchell Smith Earns Another Chance Following Triumphant Ring Return
LONDON, England - Frank Warren has confirmed Mitchell Smith will get another Queensberry Promotions opportunity after his triumphant return to the big stage on Saturday night.

Smith (19-1, 9 KOs) was one of the brightest talents in Warren's stable a decade ago when he was named the 2015 Young Boxer of the Year.

But the wheels came off following a shock 10-round points defeat to George Jupp that December and he ended up serving three prison sentences, ballooning up to twice his fighting weight in the years that followed.

He drew a line under a rollercoaster 10-year spell on Saturday night when he dropped the previously-undefeated Arnie Dawson en route to a unanimous decision at o2 Arena on the undercard of Fabio Wardley’s 11th-round stoppage of Joseph Parker.

It was his first 10-round fight on a Queensberry show since that infamous night against Jupp and now Warren has told The Ring that Smith has earned himself another crack at the whip with his victory.

When asked if he would look to promote the 32-year-old lightweight again, Warren said: "Yeah, of course I'd put him on again. I like Mitchell, he's alright.

"He came over to me afterwards. We sat down and had a chat. I was really pleased for him because, especially shifting all that weight he was carrying around on him.

"He's done extremely well. I've got to be honest, the young guy he was in there with, he [Dawson] showed a lot of character and a lot of heart as well. I said to him, don't you be down on yourself."

Before he encountered Jupp that night in Manchester, Smith was flying at 13-0 and many observers had tipped the Londoner to become a world champion. He never hit the heights expected of him but his victory over Dawson has earned him a place in the WBO's top 15 rankings and dramatically reignited his career just days before he had planned to retire.

Warren added: "Mitchell has actually done something that most guys don't do.

"When they are so talented and get so far on talent that they mess up their careers because they sod around or do stupid things.

"But Mitchell has had another opportunity and he's taken advantage of it. He, along with a couple of other fighters I can think of in my time in boxing, had wasted their talent but he's done what he's done to get himself back."

It is understood that a clash with Archie Sharp (25-2, 9 KOs) could be an option for Smith's next fight while undefeated British lightweight champion Louie O’Doherty (11-0, 3 KOs), who won the belt beating Regan Glackin in Scotland earlier this month, is also a target.
