Earlier today, The Ring’s Manouk Akopyan reported that
Matchroom had pulled Diego Pacheco out of tomorrow’s purse bid to face Christian Mbilli for the vacant WBC Interim super middleweight title.
The eagerly anticipated matchup would have seen Mbilli (28-0, 23 knockouts), rated at No. 1 by The Ring at super middleweight, and Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs), the No. 2, square off and establish a clear No. 1 contender for Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO champion Canelo Alvarez.
However, now with
Pacheco now seemingly facing Trevor McCumby, that leaves Mbilli to face the face another opponent.
The move caught Eye of The Tiger President Camille Estephan's ire.
"I'm not surprised, I'm disappointed in the way they've done it, waiting till the day before," Estephan told The Ring. "It's very unfortunate because the fans wanted this fight.
"It's very unfortunate because the guy that pays the price is the fighter. I don't think [Pacheco] is the biggest draw in California. It's ducking, whether it's the fighter or promoter ducking. It's not the first time, it's the second time, they did this with the IBF. One day before the purse bid, they pulled out. It doesn't send the right message from Matchroom and Pacheco for this kid's career. It's damaging and it's not ethical to wait for the last moment like this, but we move on."
While Mbilli won't be facing Pacheco next, the hunt is on for a viable opponent.
"Mbilli is going to fight in the summertime, that's not going to change, we're hoping for the best opponent possible," said Estephan. "We're hoping to keep the WBC Interim, but these are things that are not in our control."
Mbilli isn’t the only super middleweight Estephan represents that he is having trouble finding an opponent for.
"We have the same situation with Osleys Iglesias, it's very difficult to convince people to get in the ring with him but that's a complement to our fighter because it tells us he's a very big threat to everybody," he said of The Ring No. 3 rated fighter. "We'll get them there and it'll be a fun ride.
"He'll fight this summer, it's very possible for both to be on the same card [against separate opponents] and we will get him the best opponent available. Again, it's an elimination bout for the No. 1 position with the IBF. They're supposed to go through the list and we're waiting on the IBF to send a letter."
The ultimate goal is for Eye of The Tiger to have one of their fighters meet boxing boxing star, Canelo, who will face IBF counterpart William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 3.
"Yes, absolutely, we want to get to the top of the food chain which is Canelo - we're chasing him," Estephan said before turning back to the situation he finds himself in. "There's a lot of pretenders and there's contenders and right now the way Matchroom and Pacheco is like a pretender, you're not a contender when you're ducking like this."
