Matchroom have this morning announced that newly-minted WBC interim flyweight champion
Francisco Rodriguez Jr returned an adverse analytical finding after his 12-round decision win over unbeaten home hero
Galal Yafai in their Birmingham headliner on June 21.
The bruising victory, which saw the 32-year-old
seize Yafai's unblemished 9-0 record and the interim strap won in November against former long-reigning IBF champion Sunny Edwards, was the Mexican's first foray on British shores.
A prospective shot at full champion
Kenshiro Teraji (25-1, 16 KOs) appeared the next port of call, assuming the Ring's No. 9-ranked pound-for-pound boxer wins
his latest title defence against California's
Ricardo Sandoval (26-2, 18 KOs) on July 30 in Yokohama, Japan.
Rodriguez Jr (40-6-1, 27 KOs) surprised many displaying his tireless workrate en route to a considerable upset, landing a new divisional record 575 punches from 1089 thrown per CompuBox. Yafai was floored in the 12th and lost by a wide margin (119-108, 119-108, 118-109) before
his promoter Eddie Hearn told The Ring the final few rounds were a hard watch.
Now, the division-altering result has been plunged into uncertainty as it's unclear whether this will be changed to a no-contest, as was his last appearance - an 8-round decision win over Josue Jesus Morales in December was changed to a no-decision the following month.
Matchroom, who promote Olympic champion Yafai and staged the card at Birmingham's bp pulse LIVE Arena, said in their social media statement this matter will now be handled by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and the WBC, who will no doubt seek clarity over his b-sample and the conditions leading up to this outcome before disciplinary matters.
It reads as follows: "Today, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) informed Matchroom, the WBC and BBBofC that Francisco Rodriguez has returned an adverse analytical finding as part of a post-fight night anti-doping test following his bout with Galal Yafai on June 21st 2025."
