LAS VEGAS —
Mario Barrios plans to show no mercy toward aging icon
Manny Pacquiao when they square off July 19 at MGM Grand to headline a PBC on Prime Video PPV.
If the 46-year-old Filipino shows any signs of deterioration, the WBC welterweight champion Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOS) says he doesn’t have any intention to carry Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) similar to what
Jake Paul did vs. 58-year-old Mike Tyson in November.
Barrios had a close-up look at the bout between Paul and Tyson as he traded knockdowns against
Abel Ramos to escape with a split draw on the undercard. Paul said after the event that he carried Tyson to the finish line.
“If the roles were reversed, Pacquiao wouldn't try to take it easy on me,” Barrios told
The Ring. “He's not going to feel sorry for me in there. It's just the reality of the sport. I am ready to defend my title by any means necessary.
“It's kill or be killed in there. I have to go in there and make sure my hand is raised by any means necessary, whether it's by knockout or by decision. He has age. I have to be ready for whatever he brings.”
Like most Pacquiao fights,
the buildup of the bout has been a respectful one. Barrios wasn’t even born in 1995 when Pacquiao made his pro debut, but he grew up rooting for him during his legendary run.
But Barrios is promising he won’t be snake charmed by the Hall of Famer and eight-division champion.
“He's such a likable dude,” said Barrios. “It's hard to be like, 'Man, I'm about to square up with him for my title.' But I am going in there with bad intentions. I am trying to get him out of there.”
