Marcus Browne’s return from a 22-month layoff was canceled Saturday due to unspecified medical concerns a few hours before he was scheduled to fight.
Browne, a former WBA interim light heavyweight titleholder, was set to face Nigeria’s Olanrewaju Durodola in a 10-round cruiserweight fight Saturday night at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada. New Era Sports & Entertainment, Browne’s new promoter, announced through its Instagram page that the Browne-Durodola fight was off.
“Due to an unfortunate circumstance beyond our control the scheduled bout between Marcus ‘Sir’ Browne and Olanrewaju Durodola on June 28 at Place Bell has been cancelled,” New Era stated in its announcement. “Following the boxing federation’s request for additional medical tests, and with the results not meeting standards of the RACJ, New Era Promotion has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the fight, always prioritizing the health and safety of our athletes.”
New Era didn’t clarify if the medical issues pertained to Browne or
Durodola.
The 34-year-old Browne, a 2012 U.S. Olympian from Staten Island, New York, hasn’t fought since August 2023. Browne (25-2, 16 KOs) told The Ring recently that he wants to get comfortable boxing in the cruiserweight division and
eventually challenge Australia’s Jai Opetaia (28-0, 22 KOs) for his Ring and IBF belts.
New Era indicated Browne will be rescheduled to fight sometime in the fall.
Durodola (50-10, 44 KOs) has won seven fights in a row, but he is 44 and was stopped in the first round by Canadian cruiserweight contender Ryan Rozicki (20-1-1, 19 KOs) in December 2023.
The card Saturday night in Laval will still feature former WBC light heavyweight champ
Jean Pascal (37-7-1, 21 KOs, 1 NC) and
Michal Cieslak (27-2, 21 KOs, 1 NC) in the 12-round main event.
Laval’s Pascal, 42, and Poland’s Cieslak, 36, will fight for the WBC interim cruiserweight title.
Pascal beat Browne by technical decision in August 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Pascal dropped Browne three times before Browne suffered a cut caused by an accidental head-butt in the eighth round and couldn’t continue in their light heavyweight fight.
