Luis Nery is ready to get back into the mix.
The Ring has learned that the former two-division titleholder is set to face Japan’s Kyonosuke Kameda. The crossroads bout will take place on Feb. 22 from a location in Mexico to be determined.
Nery (35-2, 27 KOs) is The Ring’s No. 4 junior featherweight contender. The Tijuana southpaw has not fought since his challenge of The Ring/undisputed 122-pound king Naoya Inoue (28-0, 25 KOs) last May 6 at the famed Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.
Inoue was forced to overcome the first knockdown of his career to score three of his own in a sixth-round knockout win. Nery was lauded for his ability to floor Inoue but disappointed in himself for not leaving Japan with The Ring and undisputed junior featherweight championship in tow.
The setback snapped a four-fight win streak for Nery, a former Ring/WBC bantamweight champion and WBA junior featherweight titlist.
Kameda (15-3-2, 9 KOs) will hit the road for the first time in his six-year career. The 26-year-old featherweight has fought exclusively in Japan and carries a nine-fight unbeaten streak into his first trip abroad.
In his most recent start, Kameda scored a first-round knockout of the Philippines’ Angelo Beltran (10-3, 8 KOs) last Dec. 21 in Shizuoka, Japan.
Kameda, 26, is the younger cousin of former titlists Koki, Daiki and Tomoki Kameda. Several of his last few fights have been on shows presented by Kameda Promotions, headed by Koki, while he is also represented by Tomoki’s TMK International company.
Speculation of the bout first surfaced when Kameda Promotions announced its next two shows in February and March and didn’t include the youngest fighting family member. Nery all but confirmed the matchup in a cryptic post on X.
“Feb 22 Mexico vs. Japan,” Nery posted late Wednesday evening. “Soon [bomb emoji]!”
