Vasiliy Lomachenko is very much in no man’s land.
Following his controversial loss to Devin Haney in 2023, retirement seemed inevitable. Those plans, however, were nixed as Lomachenko’s father convinced him to continue his career.
This past May, the 37-year-old proved that he has plenty left in the tank, winning the IBF lightweight title against George Kambosos Jr.
Since then, The Ring’s No. 2 ranked lightweight has dealt with lingering back issues, putting his future on hold. In the midst of his recovery, Gervonta Davis came knocking at his door. Widely considered the lightweight king, Davis was hoping to stand across the ring from the future Hall of Famer. Those thoughts, ultimately, failed to come true.
All hope isn’t entirely lost though. The two could rekindle talks but Lomachenko’s physical and mental health come first. Although he hasn’t been spotted lately, Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s longtime manager, was able to shed a bit of light on his murky future.
In addition to Davis being interested in fighting him, Shakur Stevenson is hoping to unify against him as well. Lomachenko, by and large, doesn’t appear to have any particular favorites. But, if the decision was removed from his hands and placed directly into the palms of Klimas, he knows exactly who he would instruct his fighter to face.
“He’s (Gervonta Davis) a much better fighter I think,” Klimas told The Ring. “Shakur, I’m not gonna take anything from Shakur. Shakur is a very good fighter but he’s a bumper. He goes in a shell, he runs away. Tank comes to fight. More interesting fight. Much more intriguing fight.”
Even if Davis is the front-runner, he’ll have to prove that his majority decision draw against Lamont Roach was nothing more than a fluke. With the two likely to face off again in the coming months, Klimas and Lomachenko might be crossing their fingers in the hopes that Davis grabs the win this time around.
Nothing against Roach, Stevenson, or any of the top guns at 135 pounds but there’s only one fighter Klimas wants to see Lomachenko in the ring with.
“Right now, a full Lomachenko would be the best opponent to fight Tank.”
