Liam Smith Inks Promotional With Eddie Hearn, Plans To Scout Eubank vs. Benn
Liam Smith has returned home—in a promotional sense.

Matchroom Boxing confirmed the re-signing of the former WBO junior middleweight titlist to its roster. Smith rejoins younger brother Callum Smith on the Matchroom roster after a three-fight stint with domestic rival outfit BOXXER.

“Welcome back, Beefy,” Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn said in provided quotes to the media. “We’ve worked together before, and we’ve always had a great relationship.
"Liam certainly needs no introduction. The desire inside him burns brighter than ever before and I’m looking forward to seeing him in some huge fights… live on DAZN… that will hopefully propel him towards his dream of becoming a world champion again.”

Liverpool’s Smith (33-4-1, 20 KOs) was previously in The Ring’s top ten middleweight ratings before he was dropped due to inactivity.

He initially signed with Matchroom in 2019, one fight after a failed attempt to regain his WBO 154-pound title in a July 2018 points loss to then unbeaten Jaime Munguia. That run lasted through his April 2022 stoppage win over Jessie Vargas in their battle of former titlists on the Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano undercard at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

A move to BOXXER resulted in just three fights, none since his stoppage defeat to Chris Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) in their Sept. 2023 rematch at AO Arena in Manchester, England. Smith previously defeated Eubank Jr. via fourth round knockout earlier that January at the same venue.

After recharging his engines in 2025, the 36-year-old will return to the junior middleweight division—and to the ring, sooner than later.

"I’m delighted to be back working with Eddie [Hearn] and Frank Smith [Matchroom CEO; no relation to the Smith brothers],” said Liam Smith. “I have always had a great relationship with Matchroom, where they’ve promoted my brothers and, of course, myself a few years back.

“It’s great to re-sign with them and now we’re looking forward to some huge fights together in 2025."
Smith won the WBO 154-pound title in an Oct. 2015 seventh-round stoppage over Apollo Thompson. He made two successful defenses before he suffered a Sept. 2016 ninth-round knockout to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) at AT&T Stadium, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

The eight-plus years that followed saw Smith hover The Ring top ten at both 154 and 160 before he was left idle in 2024.

While the intention is to win another major title, one domestic fight that has his attention is the rescheduled April 26 grudge match between Eubank Jr., The Ring’s No. 5 middleweight contender, and Conor Benn (23-0, 14 KOs).
“Obviously, I will be keeping a very close eye on the big fight coming up in my division with Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn,” Smith said. “But generally speaking, I’m very excited about what the future holds for me, especially with Eddie so closely involved with the Riyadh Season shows and some of the biggest events in the sport.
"I’m buzzing to be working with Eddie and Frank again. This is a big year and I can’t wait to get going with Matchroom."
