Liam Paro, Richardson Hitchins Both Within Limit For IBF Second-Day Weigh-In
Richardson Hitchins was initially overconfident during Saturday’s same-day weight check.

The unbeaten title challenger stepped on the scale before he realized that he was still wearing his sweats. Hitchins quickly removed the garment before he officially clocked in at 149.6 pounds on Saturday morning. His weight was only slightly higher than defending junior welterweight titlist Liam Paro, who weighed 149 pounds.

Both fighters were within the 10-pound rehydration cap that comes with IBF-sanctioned title fights and eliminators. The contracted limit for their IBF junior welterweight title fight was 140 pounds. Neither could weigh more than 150 pounds at the time of Saturday’s weight check.

Their scheduled 12-round contest headlines a Matchroom Boxing-promoted show from Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico (DAZN, Saturday, 7:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. local time).

The matchup between Ring-rated unbeaten junior welterweights represents firsts for both boxers Australia’s Paro (25-0, 15 knockouts) attempts the first defense of his IBF title. Brooklyn’ Hitchins (18-0, 7 KOs) enters his first career title fight.

Paro is rated No. 3 at 140 by The Ring, while Hitchins is No. 8.

Both fighters were just under the 140-pound limit during Friday’s official weigh-in. Paro weighed 139.6 pounds, while Hitchins was 139.8 pounds.

Hitchins previously expressed concern about having to go through with the dual weigh-ins, though he spoke more on doing so without a major title at stake. He still went that route in his last fight, a points win over Gustavo Lemos in their April 6 title eliminator in Las Vega to become the mandatory challenger.

Paro won the IBF junior welterweight title in upset fashion. He outpointed Subriel Matias (21-2, 21 KOs), who was The Ring’s No. 2 entrant and the defending titlist at the time of their June 15 meeting in Manati, P.R.

Paro weighed in right at the 140-pound limit that night, as he did in a sixth-round knockout of Montana Love last Dec. 9 in San Francisco, California. His official weight on Friday was his lightest since he weighed 139 ½ pounds ahead of an Oct. 2022 first-round knockout of countryman Brock Jarvis in South Brisbane, Australia.
