Lauren Price Earns Dominant Decision vs. Natasha Jonas, Unifies Welterweight World Titles
ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON -- Lauren Price marked an historic night at the Royal Albert Hall with a punch-perfect display against Natasha Jonas, nearing her dream of becoming undisputed welterweight champion after boxing beautifully from start-to-finish and adding more championship gold to an ever-growing collection.

Ring titleholder Price (10-0, 2 KOs) successfully defended her WBA strap and ripped the WBC and IBF belts from the grasp of Jonas (16-3-1, 9 KOs) in emphatic fashion, winning clearly on all three cards.

Victor Loughlin scored her a 98-93 winner while Guido Cavalleri had it 98-92. In truth, it was hard to argue with Gloria Martinez Rizzo’s 100-90 shutout scorecard, such was Price’s dominance from start to finish on this special night.

BOXXER's full five-fight, all-women's card was televised on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports+ across the United Kingdom.

"Stepping out here tonight, what a venue, we made history," Price said. "But I have to say thank you to Tasha. She's a true legend.

"I knew that Tasha would be quick to start off so it was all about using my angles, my feints and speed. That's what won me the Olympics and that's what will get me to the top as a pro."

As WBO champion Mikaela Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) defends her newly-won crown against former titleholder Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) on March 29 in Las Vegas, it feels as though the stars have aligned perfectly for another battle of Olympians later this year to crown an undisputed 147-pound ruler after a wicked display by the Welshwoman.

When asked about what's next for the 30-year-old southpaw, she made it very clear: "100% I want the winner [Mayer-Ryan 2] next, to go back to Wales, the winner of that in Cardiff. Tasha's the best in the division, I honestly believe I can become undisputed and follow in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, Olympic and undisputed world champion."

Jonas was officially involved in the loudest event at the London 2012 Olympic Games when her clash with Taylor at the ExCeL Arena in the Docklands notched 113.7 decibels. But a few miles west, in central London, the sold out Royal Albert Hall created a din that would have beaten even that moment.

British boxing icon Jane Couch MBE carried Jonas’ IBF and WBC belts as she emerged into the famous old hall second, a fitting hat tip to one of this country’s true pioneers on a landmark night for women’s boxing.

This was the first women’s fight to ever headline the Albert Hall, an iconic boxing venue, and there was a celebratory atmosphere on the eve of International Women’s Day.

But it did not extend to the two southpaws doing the fighting, as both women got straight to business in an entertaining first round. The Welsh contingent in the crowd roared when WBA champion Price landed with a pair of big right hooks, enough to secure her the opener.

Jonas, the more experienced of the two and a veteran of big fights with the likes of Taylor and Mayer, found herself straight back under pressure in the second as chants of ‘Pricey’ echoed around the venue.

With 20 seconds left of the round, 30-year-old Price, 10 years’ Jonas junior, staggered her opponent with another hook as she sealed another good round’s work with a flourish. She simply could not miss with her right hook.

It was more of the same through three and four, Jonas seemingly unable to land anything of note while Price’s educated pressure won her rounds comfortably. The fifth had been a decent one for Jonas until the final 20 seconds of the round, when Price landed with two more big lead hooks which nearly downed her opponent.

Although the pair met here for three welterweight belts, it is worth noting that Price won middleweight gold at the Olympics while Jonas was a lightweight in her 2012 campaign. And there seemed to be size and strength advantages which underpinned all of Price’s good work.

Even so, it was her hand speed and skill which made this such a joy to watch as she relentlessly racked up the rounds on the cards. But despite the one-sided nature of the fight, Jonas simply refused to crumble in the face of more one-way traffic than she’d ever had in her previous 19 professional fights.

Jonas smiled when the bell went and, after months of thorny build-up, the pair embraced. This was a special night for both but, on this evidence, Price will have many more to come.
