Last Crescendo Undercard: Double Delight For Saudis As Alakel, Almayouf Go The Distance
ANB ARENA, SAUDI ARABIA -- It was a welcome start to the Last Crescendo bill, as two of the country's own in Mohammed Alakel and Ziyad Almayouf improved their unbeaten records by producing six-round decision victories preceding a busy seven-fight championship bill.

To kick off the pay-per-view bill being screened on DAZN worldwide, Riyadh's own lightweight prospect Mohammed Alakel showed spite and better punch selection in stages en route to a 60-54 points win over a tricky Engel Gomez.

After an ineffective first round, Alakel (3-0) began targeting the body in the second after getting caught clean up close. He landed a five-punch combination, finished with an uppercut, as Gomez (8-43-3, 5 KOs) pressed forward recklessly and gamely goaded the 20-year-old.

Roberto Duran, who was in the youngster's training camp for the final fortnight, couldn't help himself as he got up before the third and threw a double jab in frustration, perhaps urging Alakel to set up his attacks more.

A four-punch combo kicked off round three and he landed two nicely-placed uppercuts through the 53-fight professional's guard, before the stanza frustratingly petered out.

However, there was a frenzied start to the fourth. Gomez suddenly found himself in a world of trouble, pinned against the ropes, though Alakel rushed his work and allowed the 25-year-old breathing room as he smothered, held and bided his time recovering.

The fifth was scrappy and the final frame followed that pattern as they exchanged in centre ring, one of Alakel's more fervent supporters making his voice heard throughout as the youngster snuck a disguised uppercut but little else in an anticlimactic ending.

Ziyad Almayouf returned to winning ways in the night's opener at junior-welterweight, banking a 60-54 points victory over Brazilian journeyman Jonatas Rodrigo Gomes de Oliveira.

Ten-minute delay aside, Almayouf (7-0-1, 1 KO) began intently and regularly flicked out his left jab to good effect in the opening round. Oliveira (6-21, 5 KOs) was content letting the 24-year-old tee off on him, head then body, landing a one-two combination freezing the Brazilian for a half-second as they jostled for centre ring.

Beckoning the hometown fighter forward, he ate an overhand right and more flurries as the crowd stirred with pleasure at Zizo's early work.

Oliveira absorbed more damage in round three before being wobbled near the halfway point of the fourth, his possum play making him resemble a punching bag with tempered resistance in response.

After a sluggish first-half of the fifth, Almayouf unloaded combos but Oliveira was content to be hit, as he too was catching the unbeaten man clean, albeit not with enough power to trouble him.

Still, face marked up heading into the sixth, you could understand an eagerness to go for the stoppage in the dying embers - but that proved futile.

Ziyad climbed the ropes and beckoned for some noise afterwards, though he and his team will know more is needed if he's to truly excite these bloodthirsty fans as he steadily steps up the competition levels.
