Perfect timing for Kurt Scoby, Adam Azim better be ready, says Bermudez
Kurt Scoby will be seeking more success than his compatriot Brandon Glanton managed in April, as the American gears up to feature on the Chris Eubank Jr-Conor Benn II undercard.

Just 57 days after scoring an eighth-round stoppage win over Alex Martin in New York, Scoby (18-1, 16 KOs) will face a much sterner test of his junior welterweight credentials in BOXXER-backed prospect Adam Azim.

It's the first time the Slough talent faces a puncher with a better knockout ratio (88%) than his, though accepting this step-up on short-notice merely adds to the intrigue as Azim ends a frustrating nine-month layoff next weekend.

He told The Ring the opponent didn't matter to him, as he'd use the opportunity to produce a showcase display in-front of his biggest audience yet, with 67,484 in attendance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for The Ring's first ever event six months ago.

A similarly grand turnout is expected second time around on November 15 with Azim the second-youngest boxer set to appear on a five-fight undercard preceding Eubank-Benn II on DAZN PPV.

If he's able to emerge injury-free, a quick turnaround before the holy month of Ramadan hasn't been ruled out - as was the case last year - BBC have tentative plans to feature him on a February show.

The roadmap is rosy again after a stagnant spell on the sidelines, yet Scoby's head trainer Hector Bermudez has warned the 23-year-old from overlooking the task at hand.

"He's a young lion trying to make a name for himself, get the gatekeepers, b-level guys and those on the way down, it's good matchmaking, but now he's agreed to face another lion and will be in a real fight," Bermudez told The Ring.

Scoby, 30, was a former collegiate running back in football and has steadily built a name for himself on stateside shows since a second-round stoppage win over Australia's then-unbeaten contender John Mannu in February 2023.

Armed with an athletic, explosive base once primed for a different discipline, it's clear his stock hasn't fallen too far after an upset defeat by Dakota Linger in April 2024.

Linger (17-7-3, 13 KOs) was busier with his output, throwing and connecting on more total punches over six rounds before landing a swarming barrage Scoby had no answers for.

Former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter is a fan, much like former sparring partner and two-division beltholder Devin Haney, while embracing a new environment five hours away from his New York home has aided Scoby's progression.

"When someone comes to me, they still want to get better. He came to me," Bermudez said. "I don't babysit anybody, kept it real: he had no survival tactics, has all the talents in the world but at the end of the day, didn't have the defence he needed in that [Linger] fight.

"We worked on it and within two months, Kurt was already a different fighter, just needed a quick alignment to understand what needed to be done in those situations."

Curbing wasted energy and being more economical with his movement, was a key area to hone. Rounding out the edges and being more efficient, defending astutely in the pocket, was another.

Scoby's co-manager Daniel Gonzalez perhaps spoke this opportunity into existence after his Martin win in September. At the time, he told BoxingScene:

"Kurt is ready for a big fight. He seems to be on Turki [Alalshikh's] radar, and an opportunity will hopefully soon present itself. At 18-1 with 16 knockouts, he is in the middle of the prospect and contender categories. Clearly, we want to get on the big stage and he will be stepping up moving forward - we need a signature win against a real contender to really be on the map."

Scoby was already training with a November 8 date in mind, so while late-round conditioning remains untested, there will be no questions over his physical shape come fight night.

"He said yes right away when the offer came to us, then it went away. Kurt made a post calling him out a little bit, they accepted after that. The power of social media," Bermudez recalls.

The Massachusetts-based trainer's converted firehouse gym setting isn't for everyone, but it was like a second home for Scoby after they agreed to work together.

He's won five straight, all by stoppage or corner retirement since then, and that surprise defeat prompted him to look introspectively at what could be changed.

"In the [training] situation before me, he was the man and the only real fighter but coming here, he's got a whole bunch of guys trying to make it too, just as hungry as him - better - he was in here surviving. He's doing really well right now, this fight has come at the right time."

Ten days out from fight night, Scoby sparred 12 rounds with two different partners - including The Ring's No. 4-ranked welterweight contender Rohan Polanco.

"He's sparred Rohan and Avious Griffin, both are welterweights... so he's ready to fight," Bermundez says. "Azim better come ready, you really have to come to fight with something special to beat this kid."

"I knew Adam would be on my radar sooner or later, I've familiarised myself with the young up and coming guys but there's a lot of things he does ... a lot of flaws."

Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn II will headline "The Ring: Unfinished Business" and stream live on DAZN PPV from 12pm ET/5pm GMT.
