Three years after winning world junior flyweight honours,
Kim Clavel produced a disciplined boxing display to ensure the IBF strawweight title remains in Montreal with an impressive 10-round points win over
Sol Cudos, becoming a two-weight titleholder Saturday night.
Argentina's Cudos (10-1-2, 3 KOs) was seven years her junior and travelled 5,000 miles away from home for a first title defence five months after seizing the vacant crown in a split decision nod over Maria Sol Baumstarh.
Yet any physical advantages the South American looked to impose were quickly nullified by a determined challenger whose hand speed and combination punching worked well throughout, wearing down Cudos' best efforts as their two-minute rounds flew by.
The scorecards rather told a clear story: 99-91, 99-91 and 98-92 for the eight-year pro, who called for a WBC unification against
Yokasta Valle next. The 33-year-old (33-3, 10 KOs) already has a title defence on tap for the
Jake Paul-Gervonta Davis bill come November 14, but it's that sort of ambition that needs to be shown for a champion with no time to waste.
WBO beltholder
Sarah Bormann (20-1, 7 KOs) makes her second 105-pound crown defence during a unification with Japan's WBA ruler
Yuko Kuroki in her native Germany next month and the division is quickly having clarity a year after Seniesa Estrada's retirement.
Their strawweight scrap headlined a busy card at Montreal's Theatre St-Denis, on a night where Valle's 21-year-old sister and junior flyweight Naomy (14-1, 9 KOs) suffered a career-first decision defeat by unbeaten hopeful Federica Macri' on the non-televised prelims.

Tamm takes another foe apart
Tammara Thibeault (4-0, 3 KOs) built up an impressive reputation in becoming an esteemed amateur over 14 years. Now while not yet a year into life within the paid ranks, she's speed-running her way to the upper echelons of an admittedly-thin middleweight division.
Here, the Canadian needed less than half a round to dismiss Italy's Cristina Mazzota without leaving first gear - a sharp jab and one-two combo had the visitor in danger early and she smelled blood. It can't be a coincidence that
MVP's new Australian signing Desley Robinson will defend her 160-pound titles against Logan Holler in a promotional debut next month.
The 28-year-old will be watching with keen interest in a weight class devoid of world-class talent after former undisputed champion
Claressa Shields and later longtime rival
Savannah Marshall departed the ranks to pursue challenges elsewhere.
Akdeniz aces latest test
There's been
plenty of hype around surging contender Arthur Biyarslanov (19-0, 16 KOs) in recent years but it appears Canada has another savvy southpaw to get behind after Mazlum Akdeniz pitched an emphatic fourth-round stoppage win over Anthony Soto (13-1-1, 8 KOs).
Colorado's Soto had seldom faced opposition as strong as the 28-year-old and so it proved after two rounds, the younger man all at sea courtesy of some whipping left hooks and even sharper lateral movement. Sheer willpower and muscle memory kept the visitor on his feet during their fierce close-range exchanges, as he was constantly second best and unsteady.
Akdeniz merely grew in confidence - how could he not - and remained patient before referee Steve St Germain had seen enough, stepping in after Soto ate more punishment without reply. He couldn't complain and Akdeniz (22-0, 9 KOs) certainly picked the right moment to record his first stoppage win in nearly four years on DAZN under MVP's watch.
Tiafack scores another TKO finish
To kickstart the main card opener, streamed live on DAZN, Nelvie Tiafack (2-0, 2 KOs) began as he meant to go on. The 26-year-old Cameroon-born German heavyweight unloaded punches aplenty to head and body en route to an inevitable stoppage win after four rounds against Ramiro Edwin Robles, announcing himself in style on his MVP debut.
He was ticked off for straying low downstairs early and inadvertently hitting behind the California native's head but that didn't deter him from diversifying his attacks, continuing to tee off on a 5-0 hopeful who marched forward into the fire no matter the consequences.
"My coach told me to calm down, just outbox him and then I'll get the TKO. I started too feisty, you have to find the spots, this was a tuneup and I hope to go a long way, we've already got plans," he told Ariel Helwani post-fight when assessing his performance and whether there was potentially another bout forthcoming before the year ends.
