Kieron Conway Batters, Stops Gerome Warburton In Four Rounds To Win British Middleweight Title
LONDON, England — Kieron Conway added the British middleweight title to his collection via a clinical fourth-round knockout of Gerome Warburton.

Conway (23-3-1, 7 KOs) won the vacant Commonwealth title in his last outing and looked like a man on a mission here at Copper Box as he set about "The Bread Maker" from the off. Maybe he needs the dough.

From the opening bell "Too Class" was refusing to pull punches against his opponent from Wales, who had only lost once before Saturday.

And Conway got his rewards with the finish in the fourth round, which was his third stoppage victory out of his last four.

It will be six years next month since Conway tried and failed to win the British title for the first time around, with a draw against defending champion Ted Cheeseman meaning the belt stayed with him at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Now, a few miles across east London, Conway’s British title dream came true at the second time of asking.

He said: “It’s great. It’s been a long time coming. This was my second attempt and I’m really happy with this one."

Both men had their moments in an even first round but it was Conway who had landed with more eye-catching shots, with a right hook to the body and then a straight to the head.

The 29-year-old from Northampton was making the first defence of the Commonwealth middleweight title he won via split-decision victory over Ryan Kelly in November in what was the biggest win of his career to date.

And he started here like a man determined to make an early impression on southpaw Warburton. Midway through the second, Conway leant back to evade a jab and then fired back with a lead hook of his own which seemed to stun his opponent.

As the second round progressed, Conway had no intention of moving backwards at all, instead allowing Warburton to tee off on him as he tucked up before firing back with big shots of his own, which were having mixed success.

A left hook from Conway seemed to land well with 90 seconds left of the third, as Warburton retreated momentarily to the ropes. But Conway was putting a lot into the early exchanges and appeared to be breathing heavily by the time the third finished.

But he was straight back to business in the fourth and clearly switching his attack to the body. Warburton had already winced from a couple of scything hooks before the end came after 1:26 of the round.

Another vicious body shot had found the target, which forced Warburton to momentarily look for the floor. But when he stayed on his feet, Conway simply continued his attack. There was still time for another couple to land before the towel came in from the corner to end the punishment.

Conway added: “I knew all through training camp this wasn’t going to go 12 rounds. I’m finally sitting down on my punches and as you could see I went to the head early on and in the fourth round I thought ‘let’s take it down now’."
