It's homecoming night for Kieran Molloy as he takes on Kaisee Benjamin in a 10-round welterweight contest in Galway, Ireland on June 28.
The show, which is to be promoted by GBM Sports and streamed live on DAZN, will also feature
Shakan Pitters vs. Bradley Rea for the European light-heavyweight title.
Molloy (11-0, 6 KOs), a decorated amateur, has impressed in the paid ranks so far and last time out stopped Riccardo Crepaldi in five rounds at York Hall. But now he's set for a step up against former British title challenger Benjamin (18-4-1, 6 KOs).
Galway's 27,000-seater Pearse Stadium will play host.
“If you’re a young lad growing up in Galway, Pearse Stadium is the home of your heroes," Molloy said.
"One of my favourite daydreams as a youngster starting out in boxing was one day walking out into a packed Pearse Stadium and hearing Galway roar. On Saturday June 28th I get to live that dream for real and I can’t wait."
“Galway people really get behind their own – whether it’s hurling, football or boxing – and I am so grateful for all the support I get. I am looking forward to going out there and putting on a great show for everyone and making a big statement about my intentions to bring major world titles to Galway.”
Promoter Izzy Asif said: “Kieran Molloy has got all the makings of a megastar – much like Barry McGuigan back in the day, he appeals to everyone from fight fans to little old ladies. He’s an incredible mixture of cold technical ability and ferocious killer instinct, but he’s also the nicest young man you could meet. He’s a great ambassador for his sport and his county.
“We’re proud and excited at GBM to be giving this future world champion a homecoming like this. He’s got a tough test against the very experienced Kaisee Benjamin. It’s going to be a hell of a fight and an electric atmosphere inside the famous Pearse Stadium on Saturday, June 28th.”
Pitters (20-2, 7 KOs) and Rea (20-1, 10 KOs) will clash for the vacant EBU 175-pound title after it was relinquished by
Daniel Blenda Dos Santos, who pulled out of both his scheduled European championship contests with the two Brits earlier this year.
Elsewhere on the card, Lerrone Richards (18-1, 4 KOs), who hasn't fought since an upset knockout loss at the hands of Steed Woodall last year, returns to the action against Joe Ward (12-1, 8 KOs).
