Keyshawn Davis accepted second place on the Olympic podium but in the pros, he refuses to take a backseat to anyone.
Being viewed as the best lightweight in the world is subjective. To some, that distinction is held by either Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, or Vasiliy Lomachenko. Davis though, The Ring’s No. 5 ranked 135-pounder, isn’t shown that sort of love. Still, even if he remains on the outside looking in, Davis doesn’t care about your opinion. The only viewpoint that matters to him, is his own.
“I’m the best right now,” explained Davis to MillCity Boxing. “You know why I’m the best? Because I believe I’m the best. I’m a keep showing y’all.”
On February 14th, at the Theater in Madison Square Garden, Davis’ claims could receive a ton of firepower. On the night, the former Olympic silver medalist will face off against Denys Berinchyk, The Ring’s No. 6 ranked lightweight and current WBO champion.
If Davis grabs his first world title though, he’ll still have work to do. Stamping his name as the division’s best could become easy and feasible, however, if he were willing to face Stevenson. That of course, isn’t happening.
Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) loves Stevenson like a brother. Simply put, he doesn’t envision a world where they’ll swap fists. Still, even with a fight against Stevenson off the table, Davis is ready to create his own path to the top. As long as he takes care of business next month and continues to run through the competition, he believes everything will work itself out.
“I don’t have to fight Shakur for me to be the best. I can go get this belt, unify, then go to 140 then take over that division. And then what? All that Shakur sh*t will go out the window. I’m bigger than Shakur. I don’t know but Shakur probably peaks at 135. My peak is at 147 and I know that for a fact.”
