Keyshawn Davis: Gervonta Davis is Dodging Me, It Could Be Crawford-Spence of Our Era
Gervonta Davis fought to a controversial majority draw decision against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1.

Davis retained his WBA lightweight title despite a sloppy performance, which included taking a knee due to an issue with his eyes. The ninth-round sequence was not ruled a knockdown, as Roach went on to deposit a career-best performance and outlanded Davis 112 to 103 in the fight. The New York State Athletic Commission announced the result of the fight would stand after Roach’s team filed an appeal.

Prior to the contest, in an interview with The Ring, recently crowned WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis called for a title unification clash against Tank.

“I feel like he doesn't want to fight me. He's just letting it marinate so when he does have to fight me, it's going to make the most sense,” Keyshawn Davis told The Ring in an interview. “What's lit right now, what's on fire right now, is Davis vs. Davis. If he wants to fight anyone that makes sense, I genuinely feel that it's me.

“I had Tank's attention two fights ago. I've had Tank's attention. I genuinely feel that he doesn't really want to fight me. But he knows that he has to fight me, because I am going to keep winning and build my name up to a star, to a star outside of boxing. It's going to make a lot of [business] sense. Win, lose, or draw, potentially, he can [retire and] walk away from that sh** and be like, 'I won [monetarily] at the end of the day. And I can continue with my career. Almost like a Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence. Think about it like that. But earlier in our careers though. Not too much later.”

Roach, a 130-pound WBA titleholder, was making his lightweight debut and definitely earned Davis’ respect in the dance.

Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is ranked No. 1 by The Ring; Keyshawn Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) is ranked No. 3 following his fourth-round knockout of Denys Berinchyk in February for the WBO title he now holds.

“[Berinchyk] was ass. He was straight garbage,” Gervonta Davis said during the fight week buildup of the Roach fight. “You know it. Top Rank knows how to do it. Top Rank is good at putting people that have a good record, but be ass. Berinchyk was worse than George Kambosos.”

Keyshawn Davis shared a message to detractors who feel his knockout performances of late have been a fluke.

“People are sleeping on my defense and power,” he said. “I feel that I have a great defense. I don't get hit unless it's set up real well. And I can really punch. Y'all can keep sleeping, but they will find out once they get in there. I am really strong as f***. I am stepping into that grown man's strength now.”
