Kevin Lele Sadjo Won't Fight Callum Simpson In A Million Years; He's A Monster, Says Manager
Just eight months after relinquishing his European super-middleweight title, Kevin Lele Sadjo has been installed as the mandatory challenger to new title holder, Callum Simpson.

However, Simpson’s manager, Kevin Maree, has told The Ring that he doesn’t believe the prospect of trying to reclaim his old belt from the in form Yorkshireman will hold much appeal for the former champion.

Simpson (18-0, 13 KOs) won the vacant European title in June, getting off the floor twice to stop dangerous and previously undefeated Italian puncher, Ivan Zucco, in ten rounds.

Around 15,000 fans were in attendance at Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium to witness the hometown hero become the Yorkshire town’s first ever European champion.

Whilst Simpson star has risen sharply, Sadjo (25-0, 22 KOs) has spent much of the past twelve months entangled in boxing politics.

Late last year - and after making just two defences of his EBU title in three years - he vacated the famous blue and gold belt in order to chase an IBF title eliminator against undefeated puncher, Christian Mbilli. That fight fell through at the negotiating table and the Frenchman was then linked to a fight with undefeated Cuban, Osleys Iglesias.

That fight also collapsed and last month, the EBU installed Sadjo as mandatory challenger for his old title.

A fight between Simpson and Sadjo would have major world title implications for the winner but whilst Maree would have no qualms about putting his man in with Sadjo, he doesn’t expect the 35 year-old to be quite so enthusiastic about the idea.

“Sadjo held a European title for about 18 months without sort of wanting to fight anyone so although that's a fight that we'd obviously welcome, I can't see Sadjo fighting Callum in a million years,” Maree told the Ring.

“He held that title hostage and then he vacated it to move on for something else. He was obviously waiting for something else, why he would come back and fight an absolute monster like Callum for it to really ruin his career? That just doesn't make sense so I can't see it in a million years.

“They are both world ranked so, without a shadow of a doubt, if those two did collide it would be a world ranking fight but, again, I just can't see Sadjo doing it. It's just too too high a risk for Sadjo.

“Callum Simpson’s red hot at the moment, he’s an absolute beast compared to Sadjo who's a very small fighter. I think Callum would cause him all sorts of problems with his sheer physicality.

“I just I think he'd see that fight and think, 'What the hell would I want to go and fight Callum Simpson for a belt that I've only just vacated?'

“It just doesn't make sense.”

Simpson’s rise has been remarkable.

The 28-year-old hasn’t only conquered his hometown, he has collected a host of significant belts, climbed the world rankings and accumulated the type of name recognition and drawing power that should give him a sizeable advantage during any major title fight negotiations.

Maree quickly realised that he had a potential star on his hands and carefully guided him through the small halls until the correct opportunity presented itself.

It is just over two years since Simpson made an explosive debut on Sky Sports by blowing away Celso Neves. He quickly developed into one of the biggest names in the Boxxer stable and is now one of the few British fighters capable of selling out a football stadium, regardless of the opposition.

Maree set out a path for but Simpson has naturally assumed his role and shown that he can handle the pressure and expectation that comes with his new profile.

“In terms of making a superstar and commanding big money, there are various boxes that you would like to tick,” Maree said.

“You need them to headline shows. Well, we’ve done that now many times. The other one is to headline on Sky Sports. We've now done that four times. Then you want big viewing figures and we were told that his fight against Zucco was the highest of the year including the fight between Lauren Price and Natasha Jonas. It's then, 'Can you sell tickets?' Well, Callum’s selling 15,000 tickets in a stadium on his own with with - no offence - but the worst undercard I've ever seen. Callum’s done that on his own.

“Not only that but the product that we've got. The lad can fight like a monster. I mean some guys you might get have this package but then they've got to be protected because they're not very good whereas Callum's got that whole package but then he's also awesome. He's improving with every fight. Like I said he's an absolute monster and his mentality is incredible.”
