Kevin Brown Outpoints Juan Meza Angulo, Retains Secondary WBA 140-Pound Title
ORLANDO, Florida — Cuba's decorated amateur Kevin Brown remains perfect as a professional, but had to endure some tough moments en route to a 10-round unanimous decision win over Juan Meza Angulo in their Boxlab Promotions headliner.

The 31-year-old (8-0, 3 KOs) won by scores of 100-90 twice and 99-91 to defend his WBA secondary junior welterweight title and effectively cap a busy card packed with intriguing prospects, as well as a former two-time heavyweight title challenger making his return.

Brown excelled during the opening three rounds, looking slick and first to the punch against a short-notice foe in Angulo (9-3, 6 KOs). Having scored a first-round knockout over Jose Rodolfo Rendon Nunez three weeks ago, the Mexican was fresh and bullish upon replacing Ramon Barraza Celedon (22-1, 16 KOs), which told the longer their exchanges were.

In the fourth, the 27-year-old pitched an inspired round and followed that up with more success in round five. Brown was being tagged all too easily and the fancy footwork had disappeared, so a second wind was dearly needed.

Angulo rocked him backwards with a crisp left hand midway through the seventh, though Brown countered in stages and had success that way — a big right hand landing early in round eight as they exchanged haymakers.

Although this was fought at a grueling, measured pace, Angulo had enough energy to unload combination punching furiously in the final frame. The one-sided scorecards didn't do his display justice, on a night Brown's defensive vulnerabilities were laid bare again.

Nonetheless, he emerged victorious. "I'm happy to represent my country, my team are preparing [for me] to fight the best of the division, you'll see me very soon," the WBA's No. 10-rated junior welterweight contender told Beatriz Callis during a translated interview.

The card was streamed on BXNG TV. Read below for the full undercard results:

Ingram ices Robinson in two-round firefight

Antraveous Ingram (12-0, 6 KOs) wasted no time racing towards a finish, adding his second stoppage victory of the year to overwhelm Jeremiah Robinson (8-7, 8 KOs) during a junior middleweight contest that began sharply and with a fast-and-furious pace in the co-main.

Robinson's resistance was broken early, floored by a heavy right hand and while he buzzed the 26-year-old in response during a wild exchange at centre ring, that fleeting success was merely a final stand before the younger man was stopped at 1:42 of the second stanza.

Luis Ortiz blasts overmatched Penson

Two-time world heavyweight challenger Luis Ortiz ended an 18-month layoff with a 30th career knockout victory, this one felt inevitable from the opening bell as he stalked overmatched opponent Phillip Penson (8-5-3, 2 KOs) around, throwing power shots.

Ortiz (35-3, 30 KOs) floored him three times - the first was ruled a slip - and the 40-year-old's face told the story: he didn't want to continue after absorbing shots downstairs in the corner. Soon enough, the one-sided demolition job was mercifully over.

It was a quick night in the office for 19-year-old rising prospect Kaipo Gallegos. The teenager, ranked No. 15 by the WBA, dropped Alberto Mercado (17-9-1, 4 KOs) twice before the 37-year-old's corner opted to stop the fight after two completed rounds.

Gallegos (10-0-1, 8 KOs) displayed all of the skills that make him an intriguing prospect, consistently making Mercado miss and countered him at will throughout the night.

The dynamic southpaw dropped Mercado in the opening round with a straight left hand to the liver. Late in the following frame, Gallegos hurt Mercado to the body again before following up with a barrage of punches and sending him to the canvas again.

Jobed Collazo edges past Shelvin Fairman

Pro debutant Fairman (0-1) had the upper hand early, but as the fight progressed, Collazo started to land the bigger shots and get the better of the exchanges in the all-action brawl.

Miguel Brenes Diaz stops Keegan Young

The two wasted no time trading punches, but the tide turned in Diaz’s favor when he landed a huge left hook that wobbled Young (1-2, 1 KO). After Diaz (2-0, 2 KOs) landed a barrage of punches in the corner, the referee stopped the fight with 1:08 left in the first round.

Reina Tellez batters Mayela Perez

It was one-way traffic throughout, as Tellez landed big shots in the eight-round bout to win a unanimous decision over Perez (20-30-4, 10 KOs). Tellez won 80-72 on the three judges’ scorecards and improved to 13-0-1 with five knockouts.

Veitia delivered a dominant performance, dropping Kidd (10-16-3, 5 KOs) four times to earn the stoppage with 56 seconds left in the third round. Veitia, of Sancti Spiriyus, Cuba, improved to 6-0 with six knockouts.

Edward Griffitts blows out Deonta Williamson

Griffits (4-1, 2 KOs) landed a left hook and right hook to the body before going upstairs with a left hook to drop Williamson (2-4, 2 KOs). Williamson rose to his feet on wobbly legs and the referee called a halt to the bout with 1:15 left. The win was Griffits’ third in a row and the second first-round knockout of his career.
