Is there a hotter division currently than 140 pounds? Kelvin Davis doesn’t think so. Seemingly every week, either a new face emerges, or one of the established ones makes an impression on the masses.
Davis (14-0, 7 KOs) hasn’t made his mark yet. He isn’t ranked in the top 15 in any of the four sanctioning bodies, so a title shot isn’t ostensibly near. Still, while fighters such as Teofimo Lopez, Arnold Barboza, or Richardson Hitchins could be viewed as the top dog, Davis believes that when it comes to being the best, you're looking at him.
“I’m the top guy at 140,” said Davis during a recent interview with The Ring. "Nobody at 140 pounds is better than me. Nobody."
Davis has never needed motivation but just a few days ago, a special moment put him over the edge.
The 28-year-old had one hand in the air as he jumped up and down ringside in New York's Madison Square Garden. The reason for his jubilation was a one-sided fourth-round stoppage win produced by his brother, Keyshawn Davis.
As they celebrated, Davis couldn’t have been prouder as his younger brother became a full-fledged world champion. Now, he believes his time is coming.
In terms of the route he would like to travel, it doesn’t quite matter to Davis. Although he understands that he isn’t knocking on the door of a title shot, the 140-pound prospect has a feeling that he isn't too far away.
If and when he finds himself standing across the ring from one of the junior welterweight division’s top guns, Davis will be ecstatic to show that the so-called greatness they possess, is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
“A lot of these guys are hype jobs. They be hyped up against lesser opponents. In due time, it will tell for sure.”
