Keith Thurman To End Three-Year Layoff, Set To Face Brock Jarvis on March 12 in Sydney
Keith Thurman is once again slated to square off with an Australian opponent.

This time, he will travel all the way Down Under for the occasion.

The Ring has confirmed that Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs; 1 No Contest) will end a three-year ring absence with his first fight overseas. The former unified welterweight titlist will face Brock Jarvis (22-1, 20 KOs) atop a March 12 No Limit Boxing show in Sydney, Australia.

A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday noon local time (Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET) to formally announce the event. The Ring has learned that the show will also include middleweight contender Michael Zerafa (32-5, 20 KOs)—who recently signed with No Limit—in the chief support.

Thurman has not fought since a Feb. 2022 unanimous decision win over Mario Barrios. The extended stretch would have made him eligible for Hall of Fame consideration had he not chosen to return to the ring at this time.

The only scheduled bout during that time was a planned showdown with then-unbeaten Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs at the time). The two were due to headline the inaugural PBC on Prime Pay-Per-View event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Thurman was forced to withdraw less than two weeks out after he suffered a biceps injury. He was replaced by Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs), who claimed Tszyu’s WBO 154-pound title and won the vacant belt after a twelve-round, split decision victory.

The WBO title was not going to be at stake for Thurman, given his two-year inactivity at the time and unranked by any sanctioning body at 147 or 154.

Jarvis represents an attractive opponent on the domestic level.

The career weight-jumper from Marrickville will fight in his seventh division in as many fights and ninth overall. Jarvis turned pro in Dec. 2015 as a junior bantamweight but has leapfrogged from 2019 onward.

The formula hasn’t always worked, though. Jarvis remains best known for his lone career defeat, a first-round knockout to Liam Paro in their Oct. 2022 junior welterweight clash in South Brisbane. The event marked Matchroom Boxing’s foray into the Australian market and ultimately did far more for Paro’s career than for Jarvis, who has only fought twice since then.

Thurman was a leading welterweight at his peak. The Clearwater, Florida native did his best to carry the mantle in the post-Floyd Mayweather era but was slowed to a crawl by injuries.

The worst timing came after his March 2017 win over Danny Garcia in their WBC/WBA unification bout between unbeaten welterweights. He underwent elbow surgery soon thereafter, but then suffered a hand injury when he attempted to hit the comeback trail.

Just three fights have since followed—a narrow win over Josesito Lopez in Jan. 2019; a July 2019 split decision defeat to Manny Pacquiao to end his WBA title reign; and his aforementioned victory over Barrios three years ago.
