He’s a bit older, but considering how he looked on March 12 Thurman proved that he still has plenty left in the tank.
Brock Jarvis was used as a sacrificial lamb to get the rust off. Now that he has, Keith Thurman wants to jump back in there with the big boys.
Originally, Tim Tszyu was the name Thurman wanted most. But, with the former champ taking on current WBC beltholder Sebastian Fundora, the Florida native has to look elsewhere.
He’s a bit older, but considering how he looked on March 12 Thurman proved that he still has plenty left in the tank. As he sifts through the junior middleweight roster, he notices big-time fighters in need of a dance partner. There’s one contender, however, that he seemingly wants to get his hands on more than the rest.
“Send me Boots, it don’t matter,” Thurman told MillCity Boxing.
For those unfamiliar with the nickname, Thurman is referring to Jaron Ennis. For years now, the newly turned 28-year-old has wanted to get in the mix. Big fights, however, have eluded him until recently.
A few months later, Ennis announced a move up in weight, dropping his Ring, IBF, and WBA titles. Although he doesn’t have a return date locked in, Ennis, according to promoter Eddie Hearn, doesn't want to waste time and hopes for a title shot relatively soon.
For the most part, the hype around Ennis has been enormous. That essentially doubled following his win over Stanionis.
Known for his toughness and ability to fight through anything, Stanionis had little to no success. Boxing enthusiasts now believe that Ennis is next up. If you listened solely to Hearn, he will be a pound-for-pound great.
The faint chuckling in the background is coming from Thurman. To him, all of the superlatives used to describe Ennis have gotten completely out of hand.
“You think beating Stanionis, you did something in life, kid? You think you really did something in life? He was just standing there, flat-footed. You think what? Keith Thurman brings in the ring is not more heat than that.”
