The sort of praise Jaron “Boots” Ennis has been getting makes Keith Thurman sick to his stomach.

The admiration the 28-year-old has been receiving stems from his first-round stoppage win in his 154-pound debut against Uisma Lima this past weekend in Philadelphia.

But while some are crowning him as boxing’s next big thing, Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) doesn’t believe such a low-level opponent warrants this reaction.

“That’s what you get when you pick your tune-ups,” Thurman told Fight Hub TV. “A lot of people didn’t know who he fought.”

After dropping his Ring, IBF, and WBA welterweight titles, Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) immediately turned his attention toward the beltholders in the junior middleweight division.

However, while Ennis has bloviated about fighting the best of the best, Lima (14-2, 10 KOs) didn’t represent that. The 32-year-old may have been ranked in the top 10 in three of the four sanctioning bodies, but outside of Ennis, he'd never competed stateside and in his only other step-up fight he was beaten unanimously by Aaron McKenna, The Ring's No. 7 middleweight.

Although the former unified welterweight champ criticizes Ennis for facing Lima, he is a believer in his skills.

“Boots is Boots,” Thurman said. “He smelled blood in the first round, and he handled it. The kid just couldn’t weather the storm. That’s the one thing about Boots: He is a good finisher. He’s definitely looking strong at 54, and he’s definitely gonna be a threat for anybody.”
