Kazuto Ioka has enjoyed a highly successful career.
He won world titles in four weight classes and at 36, he could be forgiven for walking away from boxing.
However, the Japanese star isn’t quite ready for retirement yet. Ioka (34-4-1, 16 KOs) look to snap a two-fight losing streak when he faces
Maikel Ordosgoitti at the Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo on Wednesday.
“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge at bantamweight,” Ioka told The Ring. "After my last fight, I made the decision to move up to bantamweight and challenge for a [title in my] fifth weight class. I feel I can show an even stronger version of myself in this new division.”
Ioka is keen to make an impression during his bantamweight debut.
“I want to deliver a performance that makes everyone feel I have what it takes to become champion in this division as well,” Ioka said. “I aim to become the first Japanese boxer to win world titles in five different weight classes.”
If victorious against Ordosgoitti (15-1, 14 KOs), Ioka will target two of his countrymen.
“I’m not sure if I will be the main figure of the division, but I am confident that I can become a champion,” Ioka continued. “I want to fight either the WBA champion
[Seiya] Tsutsumi or the WBC champion
[Takuma] Inoue. Since they are both Japanese world champions, I believe a matchup between Japanese fighters would really excite the fans in Japan.”
Ioka – a former champion at strawweight, junior flyweight, flyweight and junior bantamweight – has already achieved more than most. He still feels he can enhance his legacy.
“If I can become a five-division world champion,” Ioka explained, “I believe it will show the importance of taking on challenges, and that great things can be achieved because you dared to challenge yourself. I have many memories, but the fight with Kosei Tanaka is one where I feel I was really able to show a strong performance.”
Ordosgoitti steamrolled his first 12 opponents, all inside the distance.
The 24-year-old Colombian-born boxer competed in the WBC Grand Prix at featherweight and lost his unbeaten record to Mexico’s
Angel Sauceda Hinojosa (12-0, 5 KOs, 1 NC) over six rounds April 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Ordosgoitti got back to winning ways against Venezuela’s Adriel Herrera (4-6, 2 KOs), whom he stopped in the first round June 21 in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.
