Scuffle Erupts After Richardson Hitchins Challenges George Kambosos To $50,000 Bet
NEW YORK — Richardson Hitchins showed George Kambosos the money Thursday.

Upon the request of Jim Kambosos, George’s father and manager, Hitchins brought $50,000 cash to Madison Square Garden for their final press conference. George and Jim Kambosos dismissed Hitchins’ proposition, which led to a confrontation that required Matchroom Boxing’s security team to break them up.

Jim Kambosos also appeared to strike Lenny Wilson, Hitchins’ trainer, with a microphone while they were being separated. Wilson later attempted to throw his chair at Jim Kambosos, which led to him being escorted off stage toward the end of the press conference.

An irritated Hitchins left the press conference with Wilson and several other members of his team and didn’t speak to the media to discuss the altercation.

Moments earlier, he yelled at Kambosos, “Bet the [expletive] money, you [expletive]! … You got all this stuff to say — let’s bet the $50,000.”

George Kambosos informed the unbeaten IBF junior welterweight champion that he already placed a wager on himself with a sports book. The Australian contender encouraged Hitchins to do the same thing and pushed Hitchins away from him when he felt the Brooklyn native was too close to his face.

“The talk is over,” Kambosos said. “Whatever you wanna say, no problem. I’m here, ready to fight right now, Friday night, Saturday, no problem.”

Jim Kambosos suggested Hitchins insisted upon wagering $50,000 because he is displeased with the deal his manager, Keith Connolly, made for him. Hitchins countered by stating that he is making seven figures for their fight Saturday night in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, much more than Kambosos will earn for a main event DAZN will stream worldwide.

Jim Kambosos contended, too, that Hitchins bringing $50,000 to their press conference was a publicity stunt to help generate interest in their fight.

“All I know is one thing about you, you’ve spent six weeks of the training camp thinking about $50,000,” Jim Kambosos said. “And you know why? Because your manager negotiated a [expletive] deal. I negotiated such a good deal that I’m taking money out of your pay-per-view, your guarantee and bums on seats.”

DraftKings lists Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) as a 12-1 favorite to beat Kambosos (22-3, 10 KOs), the IBF’s third-ranked challenger for his title. Their 12-round, 140-pound championship match will headline a DAZN stream scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. ET (11:30 p.m. GMT).
