A cool ring walk, a knockout win, and a backflip, in that exact order too. That’s usually the way a Gervonta Davis fight goes.
By and large, there were zero indications that things would be any different this past weekend in Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Lamont Roach is a world champion in his own right and has always been viewed as well-schooled but considering that he had to move up in weight against a fighter known for his power, it all seemed like a horrific recipe.
Yet, Roach stood alone on an island as he promised to make everyone eat their words.
Mission accomplished.
Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) fought poised and determined and carried himself like a man who didn’t just want to win but was one who knew that he could.
Although it was officially ruled a majority decision draw, plenty around the boxing world believe Roach did enough, including George Kambosos.
Somewhere in his guarded off palatial estate, Kambosos watched closely as Roach fought an immaculate fight. Watching Davis struggle not only placed a smile on Kambosos' face, but it also validated him to a certain extent.
Over the last few years, Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) ripped Kambosos every chance he got. He clowned the former unified lightweight champ for his lopsided losses to Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko. He also called Kambosos’ win over Teofimo Lopez back in 2021, fluky.
Now, it’s the Australian who can poke fun at Davis and criticize him like there’s no tomorrow. Kicking the Baltimore native while he’s down would be easy, maybe even too easy. So instead of simply pointing out everything Davis did wrong against Roach, he wanted to ask The Ring’s No. 1 ranked lightweight and his long line of fans, a serious question.
“We saw how he looked on the weekend. What if that was Lopez in there, or Haney in there twice, or Lomachenko in there? You reckon he’d win any of those fights? Probably not.”
