Earlier today, WBC bantamweight titlist Junto Nakatani and IBF ruler Ryosuke Nishida came together to announce their unification on June 8.
The Prime Video event which will likely be broadcast by ESPN+ in America and on Sky Sports in the UK, will take place at the Ariake Arena, Tokyo, Japan.
Nakatani and Nishida, who are rated No. 1 and No. 2 by The Ring respectively, will also crown The Ring champion at 118-pounds.
The two bantamweight kings, met in the ring after Nakatani blitzed David Cuellar (TKO 3) on February 24 and agreed to face each other next.
However, the fly in the ointment was that Nishida had a mandatory obligation
and looked all set to face Jose Salas on May 28 Thankfully talks quietly continued between both Nakatani and Nishida's teams and they were able to broker a deal to face each other next with a unification taking precedence over Nishida's mandatory.
The event will also see fast rising and hugely popular bantamweight Tenshin Nasukawa (6-0, 2 knockouts) who face once-beaten Victor Santillan (14-1, 5 KOs) over 10-rounds.
Also tabbed to appear is fast rising former amateur standout out Tomoya Tsuboi (1-0, 1 KO) who will meet Van Thao Tran (18-1, 10 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round contest for a WBO regional bantamweight title.
Nakatani (30-0, 23 KOs) ran through his early opposition and holds wins over future two-weight world champion Masamichi Yabuki (UD 4), future flyweight beltholder Seigo Yuri Akui (TKO 6) and passed the litmus test of former 108-pound titleholder Milan Melindo (TKO 6). Covid stymied the tall 27-year-old’s progress and he had to wait 13 months to win the vacant WBO title against Giemel Magramo (TKO 8). He made two defenses, including his American debut, when he stopped former titleholder Angel Acosta (TKO 4) and on the undercard of Gennadiy Golovkin-Ryota Murata, he was equally impressive bludgeoning Ryota Yamauchi (TKO 8).
He moved up to 115-pounds and beat tough Mexican Francisco Rodriguez Jr. (UD 10) before capturing the vacant WBO title with a highlight reel knockout over Andrew Moloney (KO 11). He made one successful defense against Argi Cortes (UD 12) before heading to bantamweight where he looked every bit the future star stopping tough Mexican Alexandro Santiago (TKO 6) to annex the WBC title and has since beaten mandatory challenger Vincent Astrolabio (KO 1), Petch CP Freshmart (TKO 6) and, most recently, Cuellar.
Nishida (10-0, 2 knockouts) turned professional in 2019 and in just his third outing he beat former world title challenger Shohei Omari (UD 8). The tall 28-year-old southpaw followed that by dominating former WBC flyweight titlist Daigo Higa (UD 12).
A wrist injury in his next fight saw him spend an extended period on the sidelines. After a full recovery, he continued his assent beating Mexico's Christian Medina (UD 12) in an IBF eliminator and then Emmanuel Rodriguez (UD 12) to become IBF titleholder. In his maiden defense, he stopped Anuchai Donsua (TKO 7).
