Junto Nakatani’s next conquest has been made clear.
Fresh off a third-round knockout win over David Cuellar last week to defend his WBC bantamweight belt, Nakatani is set to face IBF 118-pound crown holder Ryosuke Nishida.
“Promoters are looking to get Junto back in the ring for the first or second week of June in a title unification fight against Ryosuke Nishida,” Rudy Hernandez, the Japanese star’s career-long, Los Angeles-based head coach, told The Ring in an interview.
Nakatani (30-0, 23 KOs) is The Ring's No. 1 rated bantamweight and No. 9 ranked pound-for-pound fighter. Nishida (10-0, 2 KOs), ranked No. 2 by The Ring, was in the ring after Nakatani’s win against Cuellar to begin building up the fight, which would take place with the vacant The Ring title on the line as well.
“I gave Junto an 8.5 out of 10 for the Cuellar fight, only because it wasn't perfect, and it rarely ever is,” said Hernandez. “I like it when my fighters get hit less. I'm sure the public would have liked to see the fight last longer, but the fight ended when it was supposed to. Junto did his job and was fortunate to get out of there quickly. He sustained a slight injury to his ear during the fight from a slapping punch. It caused a little bit of damage there.”
Hernandez explained that they’ll continue to operate in their own lane at 118 pounds and work toward cleaning out the division, which includes other Japanese champions in Seiya Tsutsumi (WBA) and Yoshiki Takei (WBO), and will be ready to face Naoya Inoue at 122 pounds as soon as “The Monster” is ready.
“If given the opportunity, we would be ready to fight on Naoya Inoue's undercard in Las Vegas, even if Inoue doesn't have Nakatani in his plans this year,” said Hernandez. “When I first heard about the Inoue fight last year, I got nervous and butterflies in my stomach. But to be the best, you have to fight the best and we're ready when he's ready. It seems like we are following in his tracks. Eventually, our roads may cross. We're ready to take the fight today.”
