Junto Nakatani-David Cuellar Tops Feb. 24 ESPN+ Tripleheader in Tokyo
Junto Nakatani is set to return and with his usual supporting cast in tow.

The unbeaten three-division titlist will headline a Feb. 24 ESPN+ tripleheader at Ariake Arena in Tokyo. The event will feature five bantamweights in The Ring top ten ratings.

Nakatani (29-0, 22 KOs), The Ring No. 1 bantamweight, will attempt the third defense of his WBC title against Mexico’s David Cuellar (28-0, 18 KOs), No. 8 at 118. The bout will come on the one-year anniversary of his Feb. 24 sixth-round knockout of Alexandro Santiago to win the title and become a three-division titlist.

The other confirmed title fight on the show pits newly crowned WBA titlist Seiya Tsutsumi (12-0-2, 8 KOs) against former flyweight beltholder Daigo Higa (21-3-1, 19 KOs).

Tsutsumi is The Ring No. 3 bantamweight; Higa—who retired and unretired all in the past few months—is No. 9.

The evening’s chief support features Tenshin Nasukawa (5-0, 2 KOs), who takes on his biggest risk to date. The kickboxing superstar and rising boxing contender will face former WBO bantamweight titlist Jason Moloney (27-3, 19 KOs), The Ring No. 7 bantamweight contender.

All three bouts were formally announced during a press conference held by Teiken Promotions on Friday in Tokyo.

Nakatani, Nasukawa and Tsutsumi all came up aces on back-to-back nights this past October at Ariake.

Tsutsumi claimed his first major title win in a well-earned decision over Takuma Inoue (20-2, 5 KOs), The Ring No. 5 bantamweight, to claim the WBA title on Oct. 13. The bout was part of a four title fight show and seven title fight weekend at Ariake Arena presented by Teiken Promotions and Top Rank.

Nakatani made his second successful WBC bantamweight title defense one night later. The 5’8” southpaw from Sagamihara, Kanagawa scored a sixth-round knockout of Thai southpaw Petch CP Freshmart. The feat capped a three-win 2024 campaign for Nakatani, all inside the distance.

Three months prior, Nakatani scored a first-round knockout of former title challenger Vincent Astrolabio on July 20 at Ryogoku Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo.

Nasukawa posted wins on both July 20 and Oct. 14 as well. The latter came in a third-round knockout of Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Rodriguez.

Nakatani and Nasukawa will appear on the same show for the third straight time and fourth overall.

Australia’s Moloney has not fought since a May 6 defeat to Yoshiki Takei (10-0, 8 KOs), No. 4 at 118 by The Ring, to end his WBO title reign. The same is the case for Tokyo’s Higa, who dropped a heartbreaking decision to Takei in their fiercely contested Sept. 3 battle at Ariake Arena.

Cuellar enters his first title fight. It will also provide a new road experience for the undefeated 23-year-old, who has fought exclusively in Mexico throughout his seven-year pro career.
