Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Returns Jan. 24 In Mexico, Still Awaiting Trial
It appears to be business as usual for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – as far as his boxing career goes, at least.

Chavez is set to return to the ring on January 24 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, just seven months after federal agents arrested Chavez in Los Angeles. In August, Chavez was deported back to Mexico and released from prison, where he now awaits trial over alleged cartel ties.

During a press conference in Mexico on Monday, it was announced that Chavez (54-7-1, 34 KOs) will take on Angel Julian Sacco (10-1-1, 4 KOs).

Chavez was joined by his International Boxing Hall of Fame father, Julio Sr., and the governor of San Luis Potosi, Ricardo Gallardo Cardona, among other principals, during a press conference.

The former middleweight titleholder Chavez has an 8-7 record with no notable wins since 2012.

Sacco, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has a 10-fight winning streak since starting his career with a draw and a loss in 2019.

The besmirched and long-faded Chavez, 39, proved his best days are clearly behind him by barely being competitive in a unanimous decision defeat to Jake Paul on June 28.

Days later, Chavez was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application.

The Department of Homeland Security also stated that Chavez has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his “involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives” and that Chavez is “believed to be an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel.”

In August, Chavez was released from a Mexican prison, and it was revealed that he would have to stand trial over his alleged cartel ties and arms trafficking.

At the time, it was reported that Chavez had a scheduled court hearing on November 24.
