Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s future is on the line when he faces
Jake Paul on Saturday, and the besmirched second-generation fighter is promising he'll turn the flame from his candle into a raging inferno by beating the brash content-creator-turned KO artist.
"I expect to win the fight, look good and wait for another opportunity. A lot of doors will open for me," Chavez said during a media workout ahead of his
DAZN PPV event. "At this moment of my career, he's the best chance and opponent for me to win and put me in a good position in boxing again, to try to make good fights over the next few years. This is the opportunity. What other opportunity is better for me?"
At 39, Chavez continues getting wheeled out and presented with opportunities because there is money to be made off the family name.
The past-his-prime Chavez's last best win came in 2012 against Andy Lee by knockout. At the time, Chavez was an undefeated middleweight titleholder, and the world was his oyster.
But he started squandering his career soon after.
Commitment to training, making weight and quitting in fights have plagued his credibility. In January 2024, Chavez entered a treatment program after facing three felony gun possession charges and getting arrested.
Chavez is 8-6 in his last 14 fights, although he's been paid handsomely in losing efforts against Sergio Martinez,
Canelo Alvarez and
Daniel Jacobs. Chavez is coming off a six-round unanimous decision win in July against MMA fighter and boxing novice Uriah Hall.
"I feel great and am getting better everyday. I see the progress," said Chavez. "This camp has been great. I've been doing a lot of sparring and I am in great condition … I expect to be the best version of Chavez to get the win."
Paul, meanwhile, has promised to
embarrass Chavez and make him quit.
"Jake thinks he is better than he is. I don't see any skills. You can box for three or four rounds, and after that, you need to show your skills," said Chavez. "I expect a young guy, strong and a lot of confidence. He's never received good punches. Strategy and condition will be the key to the fight.”
Chavez and Paul share a common opponent in UFC legend Anderson Silva. The Brazilian MMA star scored an eight-round split decision win against Chavez in 2021, while Paul dropped Silva in 2022 to win an eight-round unanimous decision.
Chavez quipped the best win of Paul's career is with social media and predicted a ninth-round knockout win in their cruiserweight clash scheduled for 10.
"He's never shown me anything," said Chavez. "I want to smash his face. I need to box him, pressure him, work the body and get him in the later rounds."
