Jose Salas-Charlie Edwards IBF Bantamweight Title Eliminator Planned For Jan. 24 In Tijuana
A title shot is well within reach for Jose Salas.

All that he needs is a willing opponent for that one fight to push him into contention.

For now, an IBF title eliminator versus Charlie Edwards is on tap for the unbeaten bantamweight. Sampson Boxing, LLC secured the rights to the fight for $25,000 as the lone bidder for a Nov. 26 purse bid hearing.

Wasserman Boxing, Edwards’ promoter, did not participate in the bid despite paying the nonrefundable $5,000 participation fee.

The Ring has confirmed that the bout is targeted to take place on Jan. 24 in Salas’ hometown of Tijuana, Mexico. The gigantic “if” in that equation is whether England’s Edwards will bother to go through with the fight.

Neither Salas (15-0, 10 knockouts) nor Edwards (20-1, 7 KOs) are ranked among The Ring top ten bantamweights.

Salas is right on the doorstep but held back only by the unwillingness of his divisional peers to enter the ring.

That very concern applies here, as it is doubtful that Edwards will cross the pond for a low five-figure payday. The former IBF flyweight titlist has already publicly suggested the possibility of going the WBC route for a title shot.

Such a move would mark the second consecutive title eliminator to fall through for Salas. The 22-year-old southpaw was set to travel to Puerto Rico for a Nov. 9 clash versus former two-time IBF bantamweight titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez (22-3, 13 KOs) in San Juan. Salas was left without a fight when Rodriguez, The Ring No. 6-rated bantamweight, abruptly withdrew, citing a rift with promoter Juan Orengo.

There is the possibility that Salas is elevated to the mandatory position by default should Edwards opt out of the match. Rodriguez and Edwards are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the most current IBF rankings. They will drop out of the top ten per sanctioning body rules covering withdrawals from ordered title fights and eliminators.

Salas was extended the distance in three of his last four fights. His lone knockout during that stretch, however, represents his most notable win to date. Salas stopped former title challenger Aston Palicte in the fourth round of their matchup on the Terence Crawford-Errol Spence undercard last July 29 in Las Vegas.

The current IBF titlist is Ryosuke Nishida (9-0, 1KO), The Ring No. 2-rated bantamweight. Nishida next defends his title versus Thailand’s Anuchai Donsua (16-0, 7 KOs) on Dec. 15 at Sumiyoshi SportsCenter in his hometown of Osaka, Japan.
